So you're paying for some 'exclusivity'. Not really worth it. I'd happily pay for a car with a real difference like the GT3 RS 4.0 of which they made only 500 and was actually different.

I quite liked the Sport Classic too. It had some nice little touches.

Even the Speedster was a real nice 'limited-edition' car.

re: The *DEFINITIVE* Porsche 911 Thread! EDIT: 50th Anniversary Edition Unveiled! Pg: 3

Porsche has released images and a video of the all-new 991 type 911 GT3 Cup. Should give us an indication of what the upcoming GT-cars from their stable will look like.

Quote:
The 911 GT3 Cup will be run exclusively in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in 2013. The car for one-make racing made its debut on the occasion of the end of motorsport season “Night of Champions” celebration at the R&D Centre in Weissach.
Here are the specs for the geeks:
  • 3.8-liter flat-six engine developing 460 HP (338 kW) i.e. 10 HP (7 kW) more than its predecessor
  • It is connected to a six-speed "dog-type" transmission that is operated via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
  • Brakes are 380 mm slotted and inner-vented steel rotors mated to six-piston aluminium fixed calipers. The rear axle features a four-piston.
  • The single piece center-lock race wheels designed by Porsche Motorsport now wear Michelin race slicks that are now wider by two cm (27 cm) at the front and by 10 mm at the rear (31 mm.)
  • The basic price for the GT3 Cup, which is available exclusively in white, is 181,200 Euro.

^^ From what I've understood, it's essentially a sequential-manual 'box with a 'dog-clutch'. Dog clutches allow very limited slip and is not used to moderate / control torque. Hence, they're less prone to wear and tear unlike conventional 'friction-clutches'. If you notice in one of the videos, there is a clutch in the footwell.

Further to what Suhaas has said, dog clutches use interference to transmit rotation from shaft to another. They do not use friction like normal road car clutches. The main advantage of them is that they have zero slip.

There are many designs for dog clutches. The simplest form is where the driver shaft propels the driven shaft using a planetary gear. In friction clutches you have a clutch plate that presses against the flywheel and transmits the engine's drive to the wheels.

re: The *DEFINITIVE* Porsche 911 Thread! EDIT: 50th Anniversary Edition Unveiled! Pg: 3

Porsche has unveiled the much awaited 50th Anniversary Edition of the iconic 911 to commemorate 50 years of the model's existence in the automotive market. And I must say, it's a stunning piece of kit.

The *DEFINITIVE* Porsche 911 Thread! EDIT: 50th Anniversary Edition Unveiled! Pg: 3-porsche911_50_years_edition_2013_5.jpg

High Points:
  • The 50th Anniversary Edition of the 911 will sport various special details that will separate it from the mainstream 911 models. For starters, Porsche has infused the wider rear body-work of the '4' and '4S' all-wheel-drive-models into the (2WD) 50th Anniversary Edition. Porsche has also replaced the wing-mirrors with 'SportDesign' ORVMs.
  • In place of the pop-up engine cover and the red reflector strip at the back, Porsche has inserted bespoke chrome strips reminiscent of the original 911. One can find these chrome strips in the radiator grilles up front as well.
  • Fuchs-wheels make a come-back on the 50th Anniversary Edition of the 911 (991) and they seem to be pretty well executed.
  • The retro-theme continues inside: Partial leather / checkered (Pepita - a typical '60s check-pattern) cloth-fabric, deviating-stitching, green-labeling w/ white needles and silver pivot-caps (in the instrument cluster) hark back to the early 911. '50th Anniversary' logos adorn the seats, the dashboard trim and the instrument-console.
  • Mechanically, the 991 remains unchanged. It's powered by the same 3.8 liter flat-six-pack lump that sits just-aft the rear-axle. It churns out 400 horses and sends them to two driven (rear) wheels via the standard 7-speed manual 'box or the optional 7-speed PDK.
  • Porsche will limit production to 1963 units of the 50th Anniversary Editions and they will be available only in two colour options apart from Black: "Graphite Gray" and "Geysirgraumetallic". Prices start @ £92,257 w/o options.

It's a fantastic looking thing, without any iota of doubt. But then again, it seems to be one of those ridiculously over-priced 911s that come with some premium cosmetic upgrades a LOT of traditional/emotional/sentimental tow, which eventually rob you off cleanly.

They look pretty neat, but to believe the fact that they hark back to the original Fuchs design would be stretching things a bit. To a layman, they pass off pretty much like your normal five spoke rollers, if somebody hadn't mentioned the existence of Fuchs.

The original Fuchs design which debuted with the 911 in '63.
