Tata Aria and Nano caught testing in the UK

Tata Aria and Nano caught testing the UK by a Car Reader mag.

The Aria simply blends into the European backdrop. Me like!

Re: Tata Aria and Nano caught testing in the UK

Both cars look identical to what we get here in India though the grill on the Aria seem to have more prominent vertical slats on grill.

Trim level on Nano seems precisely what we get here on 2012 LX model but this could be only the case with these Test Mules and maybe the actual sale model will sport different level of trims.

Apart from the mandatory airbags and ABS, I'm not sure what else would be included in the Nano. Better quality plastics, perhaps? One can only hope Tata introduces the Nano with safety kit in India. If you ask me, it's the Nano that needs it the most!

^^But that will significatnly bump the cost of Nano and will kill the price competitiveness of the car, I don't think it will be a clever thing to do for a car which started its journey as the cheapest car in the world.

Re: Tata Aria and Nano caught testing in the UK

^^ True. But tell me one thing. Do you think putting a 'price' on safety-features is justified? Every car in India should be equipped with some basic safety-features, IMO. Even if it's going to be more expensive. It's a small-price to pay, especially since it's 'life' that we're talking about here.

That said, how much more will the Nano cost in Britan, when compared to the prices of the car here in India? And would it be worth it, considering that one could buy a decent, used BMW or a reliable Honda at that price? I'm sure people are going to consider those options before they check out the Nano.

Tata tests even the India specific models in UK. Even Indigo was taken to UK for testing before its India launch a decade ago.

Tata has a Herculean task on its hand if it wants to enter the UK market with these two products. They have to make sure that both of these have the best kits possible at the cheapest price possible. Only then will they get a decent hold in the entry level segments. Also throwing in an extended 7 to 10 year warranty is not a bad option.

And God forbid a nano catches fire, well I dont even want to imagine what will happen to Tata in that case. Forget UK expansion it's world wide game over.

Re: Tata Aria and Nano caught testing in the UK

Why are these cars being tested in the UK when they are meant to be driven on Indian roads and in Indian climatic conditions, or is the Aria being launched in UK as well?

Absolutely - I couldn't agree with you more! Every car should be equipped with safety features.
About bumping up the price - time was when cars had no power steering or aircon. Now I think most models sport these and buyers do not balk at the extra cost.
Will these UK models of Aria & Nano be superior in terms of crash worthiness vis a vis their Indian offerings?

The Aria should be just okay, but the Nano? Not quite, I suppose. I'm sure Tata will take added measures, like re-enforcement and restrengthening the body-work, for the British market, if at all it is sold there.

Yes - certainly a big if. IMO the Nano - well... it just might sell some numbers given the right pricing and quality. But the Aria? One is not sanguine there.

I don't think the Top Gear fellows will make it easy for them but I believe that this really is a good time for Tata to introduce a < £5,000 OTR car in the EU. Despite the debt crisis, Tata will find many takers.
