Honda 1.6 liter Diesel to debut in Paris

he Euro-spec Civic diesel will roll out by month-end; India-bound diesel Civic could arrive in 2013.
Honda's all-new groundbreaking 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that was first unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show is all set to mark its debut in the Euro-spec Honda Civic hatchback at the upcoming 2012 Paris Motor Show that is slated to get underway on 27 September.

The new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine is the first of the new generation engines to appear in the next few years under the Honda's "Earth Dreams Technology" banner. It is rated at 120PS of max power at 4,000rpm and 300Nm of max torque at 2,000rpm.

Re: Honda 1.6 liter Diesel to debut in Paris

This is great new for all those who are waiting for the new Civic. With the pedigree of the Civic brand mated with this highly efficient engine, it should shoot it to the top rung of the higher mid end sedan segment.

Also it would be great to have this same engine in the City may be in a derated form evem. What about a 1.6 , 120 BHP City. Now that would be super hot isn't it, bang in the Verna's territory!

Re: Honda 1.6 liter Diesel to debut in Paris

It will be interesting to see 'when' Civic comes up with this Diesel engine in India. It could be too late for Honda to cash-in on the Diesel opportunity, just in case the 'Diesel Dual Pricing' bug bites the government or if the gap between Diesel and Petrol keeps getting reduced.

Anyways, we've already seen a thread on the Brio Diesel.

So which one is going to be first is the question now, Civic Diesel or Brio Diesel ?

Time for Honda India to pull up its socks.

Cheers,
Yogesh.

Re: Honda 1.6 liter Diesel to debut in Paris

Honda has already stated that this diesel is not going to make to India. A separate set of diesels are being developed for India. Honda's former F1 engineers are involved in its development.

As per current reports, diesel Brio is to be expected not before mid-2013 followed by City diesel in late 2013/early 2014. Only then we can think about diesel Civic.

@Mods: I think this topic should belong to International Car Scene.

Too bad if Honda has decided to give India a skip with this 1.6L i-DTEC. This oil-burner has received rave reviews across European markets where it is set to become a regular feature on the Civic hatch and very recently also on the 2013 Europe spec CRV. Supposed to be the lightest engine in its class, it is said to deliver a class-leading balance of fuel economy and performance. Here's an insight:

Unlikely for City to get the 1.6 engine, since Civic is going to have that. More likely is 1.4. Even if City has the 1.6, the power will possibly not be 120 BHP, since the petrol City already has 118. Diesels are typically tuned less on the power.

The specs are at par with Hyundai's 1.6L diesel, & Indian Hondas are generally tuned for comfortable riding. Another, Elantra in the making, but, being a Honda the 1.6L diesel Civic will sell much well as compared to Hyundai.

It is very tough to guage the Indian mentality and so no one can say for sure that the Honda 1.6 diesel would sell more than the Hyundai's.

I think the Indian customer would wait for the initial feedback of the Honda diesel before it is accepted in the Indian market.

If the government does not manage to come up with some absurd law to reduce the sale of diesel cars in the meantime (as the thought is already doing rounds), anything running on diesel will be accepted by the Indian customer.

Not necessarily. Hyundai broke both rules you mentioned in recent launches.

1. Elantra & Verna share the same 1.6 diesel engine in the same tune.
2. Verna diesel is more powerful than the petrol, both current gen as well as the previous gen.

Ah, correct! I did not think of the Hyundai angle. Thanks. :-)

But that might take away the 'premium over City' image for Civic. Unless they decide some major interior goodies for latter. I, for one, would not spend extra money on Civic unless the engine is more powerful. But that's just me.

Re: Honda 1.6 liter Diesel to debut in Paris

Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC rated at 27.7 KMPL!!!!

No wonder that this engine has made the VW sleepless.

Quote:
There's a new fuel-efficient model joining the European market Honda Civic hatchback's range, one which is equipped with the Japanese brand's freshly revealed 1.6-liter i-DTEC diesel engine.

Following its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September and before it goes on sale in January of 2013, Honda announced pricing for the 1.6 i-DTEC Civic that starts from £19,400 (equal to US$31,100 or €24,200) for the base SE model, rising to £20,595 for the ES and £23,175 for the top-of-the-range EX.

Developed exclusively for Europe and built alongside the Civic hatch itself at Honda’s factory in Swindon, the 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit offers a maximum output of 118HP (120PS) at 4,000 rpm and 300Nm (221.3 lb-ft) at 2,000 rpm.

It drives the front wheels of the compact model through a six-speed manual gearbox, with Honda quoting a combine fuel economy of 78.5mpg UK (equal to 3.6lt/100km or 65.3 mpg US) while emitting only 94 g/km, which in Britain, translates to free road tax. The same powertrain will be offered in 2013 on the European CR-V as well.
