Interesting Tech @ Detroit 2013

While the autonomous cars topic is showing a lot of activity since the start of the new year, there a few other new concepts being prototyped and demonstrated.

They are not yet into production, though they catch attention. However, I failed to see inherent value in some of these new techniques:

A couple of them here:

"A Future Without Steering Wheels"
http://www.popsci.com/cars/article/2...teering-wheels

"Steer by wire" technology means you can steer the car with joystick, voice control etc. - not necessarily by steering.

Not sure whether there is such need or how it makes driving any more pleasant / easier / safe etc. Anyone can throw some light, why they'd create such a technology?

"Plug-In SUV" by VW
http://www.popsci.com/cars/article/2...t-people-mover

While the title catches the attention, article failed to explain what a "Plug-In SUV" concept is. Any elaboration if someone has gone through such term will be useful.
