SCOOP: Porsche 911 (991) Turbo caught undisguised EDIT: Now unveiled!

It's been a little more than half a dozen years since Porsche had introduced the 997 Turbo. And over the years, it has received a more powerful variant (the Turbo S) and a customary face-lift, among other minor changes (revised PDK 'box, DFI engines..)

Come 2014 and the World will get a glimpse of an all-new 'yardstick'. The latest generation 911 (991) will soon be available with a blower; nay, three!

The High Points:
  • As expected, Porsche has infused the traditional 'Turbo' design elements into the 911, for example: Wider footprint / body-work especially at the rear, massive air-intakes on the rear fenders, a larger (retractable) rear spoiler that mimics the whale-tail / tea-tray element on classic 911s, integrated Panamera-esque quad-exhaust pipes, etc. This time though, they've gone in for a cleaner and less cluttered front end (fewer lighting elements) and split-horizontal-louvres (a throwback to the 993) for intake-slats on the engine cover.
  • Power comes from a 3.8 liter flat-six supplemented by three turbos (gulp) and mated to a further-revised 7-speed PDK 'box. Power output is said to be in the region of 550 horses and one can expect a run to 100 km/h from a standstill in a little over 3 seconds and go on to tickle the 200 mph mark.
  • Rumor has it that it will be equipped with the same four-wheel steering system found in the all new GT3! That aside, it's safe to assume that it will be equipped with other driver aids that had been introduced in the new-gen 911 Carrera, like PDCC, S-PASM and PTV. A new 'silver' colour option called 'Rhodium Metallic' has been introduced and it replaces the older 'Platinum Silver Metallic' colour option. Not sure if the car pictured here is finished in that.
  • The car is scheduled to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and hit the roads by 2014. Expect a price-tag of 2 crores (excl. road-tax, registration, insurance) once it comes to India.

First the 7-speed manual gearbox, and now this...

Interesting!

Is there any other production car that uses a similar 3-turbo configuration? I've heard of the supercharger + turbocharger practice, but this is the first time i'm hearing of this.

BMW M550d is a tri-turbo

This same engine will be also used for X5 & X6 too.

Here's the video of the working of the same;

This is possibly the first of its kind. I don't think there is a tri-turbo engine that runs on petrol.

Also, I'm not sure if the 7 speed manual 'box will find its way into the Turbo. They might just leave it out, like they've done with the GT3. That's a bit of a bummer.

Karan has also provided some info on the BMW M550d. Watch that video, it's quite an eye opener. And I see it working in a country like ours. It makes more sense than the M5, at least on paper. You might not agree though.

There was some talk about Mercedes unveiling a tri-turbo diesel power plant in the SLK, but that was sometime ago. Similar rumors of a tri-turbo diesel SLS are doing the rounds.

This is without the shadow of a doubt one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen. The fact that it can be used as a daily car and provide Ferraris a run for their money when you put the foot down makes it all the more attractive. Dare I say more appealing than the M5 : ). I would perhaps have removed the tail for it spoils the beautiful lines but I'm just nitpicking, Probably needs it to keep the rear planted even though it's 4WD if those predicted performance figures in the OP are accurate.

How much a difference in performance do you think will there be between this and the eventual Turbo S ?

Generally, power is bumped up by 10% in the Turbo S. That should translate to a 0.2 second drop in the 0-100 km/h times and a slightly higher top whack.

SCOOP: Porsche 911 (991) Turbo caught undisguised EDIT: Now unveiled!-normal.jpg

And it's out much sooner than rumored. The 'tri-turbo' talk was hogwash after all, but everything else seems spot on. Here are a few points worth noting:

- For the first time, Porsche has unveiled not only the Turbo but also the Turbo S simultaneously. Generally, the S variant is reserved for a later date. But not in the case of the 991 generation of the 911.

- The twin-turbocharged 3.8 flat-six mill in the Turbo makes 520 horses whereas the Turbo S (with the same lump, albeit with tweaked ECU and turbo) makes up to 560 horsepower. Despite the spike in power figures, Porsche claim an improvement in fuel efficiency of around 16% in comparison to the 997 Turbo. 0-100 km/h times now hover around the low 3s and the car maxes out @ just under 320 km/h.

- Expect a plethora of tech and electronics like PTM (Porsche Traction Management), PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control) and 4-wheel steering, apart from the regular stuff like a revised all-wheel-drive system. More info on the 4-wheel steering and details on the revised AWD system here: http://teamspeed.com/forums/991-997-...bo-models.html

- Incidentally, Porsche has ditched the manual transmission and now, the engines are mated to a revised PDK 'box that's now standard on the car. This is going to disappoint several purists.

- The rear body work has been made substantially wider than before, even by C4S / Turbo standards. It is now 28mm wider than the Carrera 4 models. The air-intakes that flank the rear fenders look fantastic and the deployable front and rear spoilers that are a part of the active-aero tech are admittedly pretty trick.

- The Turbo comes standard with several goodies that are otherwise optional on the Carrera. Porsche has also taken this opportunity to provide two new two-tone leather interior options (Carrera Red / black leather and Cognac / Espresso leather) exclusively on the Turbo S only. The S also gets 18-way adaptive power seats. The Turbo also gets new options such as radar-guided cruise-control and a camera that detects road signs and speed limits.

- Prices for the 911 Turbo start at €160k and go all the way up to €195k for the S.

Re: SCOOP: Porsche 911 (991) Turbo caught undisguised EDIT: Now unveiled!

I was reading up from a MA article on this very car. The car apparently has a system where the rear wheels turn to the opposite direction of the front wheels to aid cornering at low speeds, I think this system works at speeds upto 32mph or 40KPH for us Indians. I think it may be the PTM mentioned in the post above mine.
This is very impressive o.O. On a personal note I would buy this over the Audi R8 " _ "
