Fog causes 100-car pile up on UK road

Quote:
A 100-VEHICLE pile-up on a bridge in heavy fog in England has left at least six people seriously injured and 200 suffering minor injuries in what witnesses described as "carnage".

No one is believed to have died in the crash on the new Sheppey crossing bridge in Kent. It started around 7.15am local time and continued for 10 minutes as cars and lorries crashed into each other in visibility that was down to 20 metres.

Quite remarkable that in a 100 car pile-up, not even one person died and only six have been seriously injured.
Though really unfortunate for the folks involved, this speaks big for the standards of safety followed by vehicle manufacturers in the U.K.

If something like this were to happen in India, i am afraid the damage would be much much severe.

Not necessarily. Our average driving speeds are quite low as well.

Re: Fog causes 100-car pile up on UK road

A good question to ask is what speeds were the vehicles doing when this happened. There was a research done some time ago about the tendency in the UK to stick to speed limits even when visibility was severely limited. Some respondents said that 70mph was alright in fog

Another problem is when things are so organized, any slight mishap gets amplified because people are just not tuned to surprises springing up.
