The Toyota FT-1 Sports Coupe Concept: Are you the new Supra?

Revealed at the ongoing Detroit auto show, the FT-1 Sports Coupe Concept strongly hints at revoking the spirit of the legendary Supra. Although Toyota mentioned at the Supra in a brief throwback of sorts while presenting the car, it also pointed towards it being a mere design exercise for a rear wheel drive, front engined sports coupe.

FT stands for a rather unimaginitive Future Toyota and 1 is supposed to be the ultimate. Of something. Needless to say that this is one fancy looking Toyota and let's pray that the next Supra looks like this.

Looks like one of those new-gen Lexus coupes to me. Have they mistakenly badged a Lexus as Toyota? -.-

Well it does look very nice.Bits and pieces seem like its from the LFA.I read that its supposed to be the successor to the Supra.Well if so,I hope its extremely mod friendly as was the Supra.

It could be called a replacement to the supra.In the same manner the GT-R was/is considered to be the successor to the skyline brand.Truth is that the GT-R is definitely in the supercar'ish range of things.So I'm guessing this car might be in that range.I hope though that they tone the production version a bit and make it in the true spirit of the Supra.

I think we are finally seeing some of the overly ugly jap designs mature into quite lovely looking machines

Re: Toyota FT-1 - The Next Supra?

The overall design is not something I would call extraordinary.
But the smaller and finer details are just amazing.

1. Display on the steering wheel. (At the top, centre)
2. Radiator fans exposed from the front end, either side of the bumper. (Cannot imagine how cool it would look when the fan blades are neon coloured on a black car)
3. Engine showing off.
4. Integrated F1 type blinker at the rear end. (If it is what I think it is)
5. Last, the rotary fuel cap. In a world of button release / remote release, I would love to go back in time for this.

I hope these design elements materialize.

Nice spottings! I would have definitely missed the things like the cooling fans and the glass engine cover!

Another little design tweak I like is the ORVMs, and how the are supported at the outside ends. The fact that they seem to be hard-mounted to the doors is a bit scary for Indians though!

As has been pointed out, the details on this car are astounding and certainly look avant-garde. Some more pictures to soak in.

Wow. Looks fantastic.
Very interesting to note that Toyota wants to make a comeback in the sports segment.

Can we have some pictures of this car in other colors ?

Re: Toyota FT-1 - The Next Supra?

I think its a bit premature to call it a Supra, especially when the company hasn't given it that name.
Also if we look in hindsight, Supra's were modders favourite cars. And if they use the name, we must wait to see that this one does in that respect, because it may have the name of a supra, but not the soul, not the character.

In short, we are all jumping the gun.

Behind the scenes of Toyota's California design studio;

A very cool video of design to reality;

Also to hear the engine sounds & action check out the FT-1 appearing in the Gran Tourismo 6 (PS3);

So everybody's in love with Toyota's FT1 "Supra" Concept. Yeah, me included. But ever wondered how it'll look topless?
