Re: Shell predicts the death of fossil fuel cars by 2070

I had come across this article sometime ago, which talks about the economics of Mahindra Reva/E20.

http://forbesindia.com/blog/business...e20-dont-work/

A simple break even analysis suggests that the car might break even in four years, while the lithium ion battery requires a replacement in the fifth year. The articles makes a case that unless battery prices are brought down by technology advancements, the electric car will not be economically feasible.

Also, with more than 70% of energy coming from non-renewable sources, a case for green and clean energy cannot be made in India, even though there may be a reduction in carbon footprint associated with the difference in efficiency of IC engines and electric motors.

Simple, ain't it ?
To be entirely honest, someone once claimed to have conquered fusion in a beaker.
A case of a 'storm in a tea-cup' to say the least!

Now, if only some of our manufacturers in India borrowed a page from the inventor's repertoire, and stopped making demands on the sun, or hydroelectricity or the grid

Of course it is a nice thought, but how controllable and safe it would be?

Right now the technology is in experimental stage. The equipment does not generate electricity at a scale that is useful and self sustaining. More of a lab stage. The reactor has a tendency to make its own container radio active, so not yet safe for the outside world.

But then there is huge scope. I am sure, they will find a way out to make these a portable generator replacement.

But having them in a car is a long shot. Quick charging battery technology and fuel stations that charge battery might be the way to go.

Never underestimate technology
When Jack Kilby made the first IC with a couple of transistors/gates, who would have thought that one day we will have billions of transistors on a single chip, and computers more powerful than the mighty eniac to fit in a quarter.
