Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is working on a compact sports utility vehicle to take on the Ford EcoSport. Also to note is Maruti's XA Alpha is too reported to have plans of a 2016 launch. VW's Taigun too could arrive in 2016. Ford's atttitude to Indian customers would be a boon to the expected new compact SUV manufactures.

A very interesting year 2016 and time will tell whether the Compact SUV market will dominate the scenario.

The project is codenamed S102 and will be one of the first products to come out of Mahindra-Ssangyong's joint platform project. The S102 is based on Ssangyong's X100, and will be globally launched in the first half of 2015. The Mahindra's offspring is likely to make its way into the market by end of 2015 or beginning 2016. This new model is expected to be manufactured at the Nashik.

Mahindra-Ssangyong is developing a compact 1 litre turbocharged petrol engine with variable valve timing and direct injection in line with Ford's Ecoboost engine, which can produce equivalent power of a much bigger vehicle, but can deliver higher fuel efficiency.

Mahindra & Mahindra's S102 will be the version of the Ssangyong X100 compact crossover in India, as a rival to the hot selling Ford EcoSport.

The X100 compact crossover could use a 1 liter turbo petrol engine that Mahindra and Ssangyong are jointly developing for use in their future utility vehicles. This turbo petrol engine is said to pack in technologies such as variable valve timing and direct injection.

For the Indian car market, Mahindra could tap into its existing diesel engine range and pick out the 1.5 liter-triple cylinder twin turbo diesel engine that’s found on the Quanto, and outfit this motor into the S102 (X100) compact SUV.

The Mahindra-Ssangyong X100 utility vehicle platform seems to be a versatile one what with the latest rumours suggesting that another product – most likely a compact MPV (code-named the S103) – could be spun out of this platform - An Ertiga Rival!

Notably, all vehicles in Mahindra-Ssangyong’s X100 platform will feature a monocoque design in favour of crisper road handling, lower manufacturing costs, lower weight and higher fuel economy. A front wheel drive layout will be standard on all vehicles based on the X100 platform while we – judging by global trends – infer that a platform design flexible enough to support all wheel drive functionality will not be lost on Mahindra-Ssangyong.

And that's an Evoque junior there! Will M&M call it Ev0 (Ev Zero) since it's half the size of Evoque? Guess Cross-Alpha is also going to have a similar silhouette too.

How many models are we talking about? There was an S101 initially, now I read about S102.

S103 is known to be an MPV, so there's NO confusion on it.

S101 - Mini SUV - new segment - to debut earlier than S102 positioned below the Ecosport segment
S102 - Crossover , Ecosport rival - Debut in late 2015 or early 2016.

So could I safely assume that S101 will be a sub 4m SUV and the S102 a bigger one (above 4m)?

IMO , yes it would be> 4m, international rivals are Nissan Juke and Suzuki's SX4-S Cross.

From side view doesn't it resemble Maruti Swift? I see more Suzuki inspired lines and bulges on S101 or is it just me seeing this?

Front, especially the headlamps and grill seems to have some inspiration from the Camaro and the side profile silhouette reminds me of the Range Rover Evoque.

Profile is more Cross Fabia than Evoque , especially when you consider the actual length the car will have. Still, if it looks anywhere close to a shrunken XUV, i would be very interested.

How in the world can this be called a SUV? If these things can sell with a premium being called SUV, then Maruti is foolish not to beef up the Wagon R, put a spare wheel at the back and charge SUV money

Just to confirm. How do we absolutely know that this is the Ssangyong, Mahindra and not the Hyundai compact SUV.

This will eventually spin off as the M&M's compact Crossover in India. Expected later part of 2015!


SsangYong compact-sized SUV spied in Europe.

The model is believed to be based on a platform codenamed X100 and will be the first joint product between SsangYong and M&M.



SsangYong will launch the SUV next year with a new engine lineup, also co-developed with Mahindra, which will eventually have its own version of the car.

Details on the powertrain remain thin, but it has been rumored that one of the engines being developed is a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine with variable valve timing and direct injection.
