General Motors to debut 1.0 L ECOTEC engine at Geneva

General Motors (GM) has announced that it will debut a Ford EcoBoost-rivalling, 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, direct injection, turbocharged, petrol engine in the ADAM hatchback at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Dubbed ECOTEC, the power plant has been developed at GM's International Technical Development Center in Russelsheim, Germany.

The1.0-litre EOCTEC engine will be available in two states of tune - 90 hp / 166 Nm and 115 hp / 166 Nm. In the Opel ADAM, it will be mated to a 6-speed, manual gearbox, which has a dry weight of just 37 kg. Other features of the ECOTEC engine include start/stop system, variable valve timing, counter rotating balance shaft to reduce vibrations, integrated exhaust manifold within the aluminium cylinder head, low-inertia, water-cooled turbocharger, a twin displacement oil pump and a switchable water pump.

Way to go! That's the future of automobile industry.

I am hopeful that in next 3 years, with the new FE norms being proposed by indian regulalators with minimum petrol FE at 18.2kmpl, industry will switch to small capacity turbocharged engines to keep up.
