Quant E-Sport: The salt-water powered Hypercar!

..and you though the future would be full of cars running on Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Lithium Ions. Ze Germans were having a whole different idea, salt water!

I still am contemplating whether I should laugh it off or take this really seriously.

Reportedly, this "hypercar" is faster than the current hypercar benchmark, the McLaren P1 and that too running purely on 'weewee' (why? I see no reason why that shouldn't work ).

The Quant E-Sport have just acquired approval in Munich for use on public roads and hence they are going into production.

On a rather serious note, the car is said to be powered by a NASA derived "NanoFlowcell" technology and the numbers sound good, 912hp on tap, capped to 643hp for road use. Top speed is said to be 377kmph and reach 100 from a stand still in 2.8secs.

They say it'll return about 600kms per charge. Does that mean it needs to be plugged in?

If anyone has any clue how this works please help me out a bit here!

re: Quant E-Sport: The salt-water powered Hypercar!

I would rather take this concept with a pinch of salt
As per TopSpeed its just a concept and won't make production.

It probably works by making an unbelievable claim, getting a lot of resultant publicity, finding some sort of funding, and then doing 'research' under the guise of actually developing a product. Vaporware for cars?

That's my guess.

A more reading up on this topic leads to:
http://www.energyharvestingjournal.c...sp?sessionid=1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_battery

So the fact of the matter remains that they have (or are trying to achieve) a rechargeable battery technology that offers high charge storage densities and low charge-discharge hysteresis.
The only difference being that the chemicals inside the "battery" need not be sealed. Hence, when the charge gets low, you can "charge" up with the fresh chemicals and thus restore the vitality.

Nanoflowcell is going to exhibit Quant F Supercar at upcoming Geneva Motor Show which has even more impressive performance with 1,075 hp of output. It also has all new design and Nanoflowcell claims that this model is almost production ready.

All that power AND the range is 800kms!
I find this all a little too good to be true. Either this will never see the light of the day or the pricing will be astronomical.
Otherwise I think Tesla is going to have a bad time, especially after investing in the gigafactory.

Looks like nanoflowcell is here for the long run.
Here is their Coupe Concept.

Re: Quant E-Sport: The salt-water powered Hypercar!

The company says that Nano flow cell stores electrical energy advantageously and the car would have a range of 600 KMs per full charge. But I could not find how it uses salt water to generate the charging power required.

The advantage as claimed by them is as under;
Quote:
The flow cell is the first technology that can efficiently store significant quantities of energy. The electrolytic energy storage medium does not degrade and suffers no wear and tear. The nanoFlowcell® has a 5-times greater energy density than previous flow cell technologies. It is also extremely stable, safe to operate, and environmentally friendly.

This site briefly mentions about the electrolyte consisting of metallic salts.

Re: Quant E-Sport: The salt-water powered Hypercar!

With rumors about Apple electric car spreading like wildfire, I believe, soon electric vehicles will capture majority of mindshare, not just considered an expensive novelty for eco-hippies. Hope govt. of India realizes this and also incentivizes such industries under Make in India. Nanoflowcell has kept their metallic salt formulation secret. Hope their patent filings reveal more.

Recent news reports indicate that Japan has more electric car charging points than petrol pumps. It is important to consider, that such back end infrastructure is key to mass adoption of electric vehicles. So, which is going to be most economical infrastructure? Electric charging points (solar or renewable powered added bonus), safe hydrogen filling stations (Toyota with Mirai will be pushing hard on this) and Nanoflowcell will need to develop infrastructure for mentioned two kinds of electrolyte required for their solution.

Re: Quant E-Sport: The salt-water powered Hypercar!

But need to be cautious with claims made by Nanoflowcell, as its Nunzio La Vecchia has a past reputation of exaggerated claims about breakthroughs, earlier he claimed to have developed pyrite based solar cells and also applied them for car use! Note that pyrite based solar has not moved beyond basic research in labs let alone any product. Also flow batteries are actively being deployed for energy storage, but not yet miniaturized for automotive use, though GE and research labs are active around the world. So, don't give in to false hype, until actual patents reveal the exact chemistry at work.
