I read this sometime back also but could never find the law that gives you 6 months to put a number plate.

If this law is true then a lot of crimes can be committed this way because 6 months is not a short time.

Does anyone know whether this law existed or still exists?

Hate to disappoint you, but many drive like anyone else:

Elon Musk has a Tesla Model S, of course.

Mark Zuckerberg drives a black Volkswagen GTI, but he also has an Acura TSX

Bill Gates used to drive to his office in a Ford Focus, but he had a few Porsches for fun.

Steve Balmer, drives a Ford Fusion Hybrid as he grew up in Detroit, and his father worked for Ford.

Ingvar Kamprad, who founded Ikea, drives a 1993 Volvo 240

Sam Walton, who founded Wal-Mart famously drove around in old pickup. His daughter drives around in a 2006 Ford F-150. According to the book "The Millionaire Next Door", the Ford F-150 is one of the most popular vehicles for millionaires.

Some of them have flashier rides: Larry Ellison has a collection of super cars including a McLaren F1. Michael Bloomberg and Nike founder Phil Knight both drive an Audi R8. Richard Branson flies a lot, but while in the UK famously drives a $125,000 + Gibbs Aquada amphibious car which he often uses to cross the English Channel.
