Ferrari is really keen to outdo themselves with each launch. Meet the Ferrari 488 GTB, a 3.8 liter turbocharged monster with 660 horsepower that gets to 60 in three seconds. The 488 GTB is the first mid-engine V8 turbo Ferrari since the F40, and the numbers would actually put the F40 to shame.

Yes, 60 arrives in three seconds, the same as the Speciale. But that's where the similarities end. It gets to 125 in 8.3 seconds, a second faster than the Speciale. The top speed is at least 205 MPH. At Fiorano, Ferrari's private test track, the 488 GTB is a second quicker than the Speciale, and two seconds faster than the 458 it replaces.

With a 1370kg dry weight, the 488 GTB is 10kg lighter than the 458 Italia, and while it's a little longer and wider, the overall resemblance its obvious. Its 260g/km CO2 emissions - a core reason for strapping a pair of turbos to a downsized engine - represent a 15 per cent drop over its forebear.

Peak power arrives at 8000rpm, dizzyingly high for a forced induction engine, and a suggestion the rev limit shouldn't be too far shy of the 458's screaming 9000rpm. We're also promised a soundtrack "that is full, clear and totally distinctive".

Is that a hole in the mesh? Would love to know the detail behind it. :)

Not a fan of those red bits on the dash or door pad. The console is fine.

Just when Ford thought they will have it easy with the new GT in the world of entry level super cars. :D

A teaser on how it sounds! A much more throaty growl due to the turbo. Not bad, but I am going to miss the howl of Ferrari NA motors.

Dont know how I forgot to attach the pic of the rear, prolly the best angle?

Looks good! I'm wondering why didn't they name the car as 398GTB in line with their naming convention?

Is it just me or does the rear of the car look like the grumpy cat? :p

Love the way it looks. Some styling cues from the La Ferrari as well. Expected a bit more changes in the rear though. Cant complain overall and this is going to be a real screamer.

Yeah, 398 would have made it easy for us enthusiasts. But how will you make the 458 owners to sell and upgrade if its not called 488? By the looks of it, Ferrari will soon run out of 3 digit numbers and Fiorano. :D

AFAIK, it's called the 488 because of the cc per cylinder (3902cc divided by 8 cylinders = 488).

Thanks for sharing deet.

I like this one. While the previous one was very pretty, I only found it good looking at certain angles. The rear 3/4th angle to be very specific. From the rear, front and side shots the 458 didn't appeal to me personally. In comparison this 488 looks a lot more balanced in the styling department.

Although I must admit I somehow get the feeling this car feels very 'rushed'. That they didn't give it enough time to grow up or develop more.....
Could this car simply be a knee jerk reaction by Ferrari to the McLaren 650S?

+1

This is possibly the oldest nomenclature followed by Ferrari.
Ferrari 125, 195, 250, 365, 400, etc. etc. all follow the same rule.
cc per cylinder * number of cylinders = total capacity.

Also, I think this is the first time they have used this nomenclature for a 8 cylinder car :).

I really get that feeling as well. There would definitely more tuned up versions of the 488 GTB in the months to come but it seems like they went too quick on the design and just had to catch up to the 650S and Hurracan.

BTW, I feel that about the Hurracan too.

In my opinion the 458 Italia looks much better than its successor. I think that the 458 is one of the best looking cars possible and to be honest I'm a bit disappointed with the 488 GTB.

The heart of it all.

That piece of art makes 660 BHP at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of Torque at 3,000 rpm with the help of two turbochargers and a displacement of 3902 cc.
