Suzuki issues 2 million car recall globally for smoking / burning ignition switches

Suzuki has issued a recall for over 2 million cars globally. The recall has been issued over reports of cars facing a problem, where the ignition switch begins to emit smoke. The action expands on an earlier recall that was issued on March 31 for the same defect suspected on 1.68 Lakh vehicles. That recall was issued over the same issue seen on 30 vehicles in Japan, 18 of which were police cars.

This recall has been issued for the Japanese, Australian and European markets. The biggest share of the recall is in Japan, with 1,873,000 cars across nine models getting affected. These include the Chevrolet Cruze Suzuki builds for General Motors, the AZ-Wagon and Carol sold under the Mazda brand, and Suzuki's Alto, WagonR and Swift models built between 1998 and 2009. 1,33,700 units of the Swift, Alto and Chevy Cruze along with a few other models will be recalled in the other regions.

There have been 67 reported cases where the issue was found, all of which were in Japan. There have been no reports of injuries or accidents due to the defect.
