Volkswagen unveils new 1.0L TSI and 1.4L TDI for the Polo!

At the Vienna Auto Symposium, Volkswagen has taken the wraps off it's new set of downsized turbocharged engines for the Polo:

- A 3-cylinder 1.0L TSI in 2 states of tune - 93.8HP with 160 Nm of torque & 108.62 HP with 200 Nm of torque.

- A 3-cylinder 1.4L TDI in 3 states of tune - 73.7 HP, 88.5 HP & 103.2 HP, which will generate torque figures between 210 Nm-250 Nm.

The TDI engines are compatible with Euro-6 norms and will be replacing the 1.2L 3-cylinder TDI and the 1.6L 4-cylinder TDI of the European Polo.

Excerpt from the official Press Release:

Quote:
New 1.0 litre 3-cylinder TSIŽ

The new 3-cylinder TSIŽ engine represents a consistent continuation of the Volkswagen downsizing strategy. The next evolution stage for the EA211 engine family will be implemented step by step in A0 (Polo) and A class vehicles (Golf). The charge exchange and injection components of the 3-cylinder TSIŽ that have been further developed as against the 4-cylinder engine form the basis for more efficient combustion with faster conversion of energy.

Like the familiar highly-efficient and dynamic 4-cylinder engines, the 3-cylinder TSIŽ combines low exhaust gas emissions with low fuel consumption without compromising on driving pleasure.

The 1.0 litre TSIŽ, which is initially being fitted in the Polo and the Golf in three power ratings, expands the existing modular system consisting of 3-cylinder MPI and 4-cylinder TSIŽ engines. With turbocharging and direct injection the 3-cylinder engine has power output of 85 kW in the Golf and 70***** and 81 kW respectively in the Polo. The maximum torque is 160 Nm for the 70 kW variant and 200 Nm for the engines with higher power ratings. This enables the 1.0 litre TSIŽ to achieve dynamic performance coupled with very low fuel consumption.

In future there will also be a CNG variant based on the new 1.0 litre TSI 3-cylinder engine, thus continuing the expansion of the natural gas model portfolio in the supermini car segment.

New 1.4 litre 3-cylinder TDI

As part of the engine strategy of the Volkswagen brand the modular diesel component system (MDB) is being expanded to include a new 1.4 litre 3-cylinder engine. The development focused on achieving a clear reduction in weight and fuel consumption as against the predecessor engine as well as improved performance.

The compact construction enables it to be fitted in the Volkswagen Group’s A0 and A segment vehicles. The new 3-cylinder TDI will initially be available in three power ratings (55******, 66******* and 77 kW) with a torque range of 210 to 250 Nm.

The example of the 55 kW engine clearly shows the progress made: whilst 177 Nm acted on the crankshaft of the predecessor engine that also had an output of 55 kW, the new engine has 210 Nm – an impressive increase of 20 per cent.

The new TDI engines, which all comply with emissions standard EU6, are replacing all previous diesel engines (1.2 litre 3-cylinder TDI and 1.6 litre 4-cylinder TDI) in the Polo.

VW reveals high performance 1.0L, 3-cylinder TSI

In 2014, at the 35th Vienna Motor Symposium, VW had unveiled two new 3-cylinder engines. As a part of the group’s downsizing strategy, the German automaker had unveiled a 1.0L TSI engine along with a 1.4L TDI. At the 36th edition of the event, apart from unveiling a new 6.0L W12, VW has revealed the 1.0L, 3-cylinder TSI in a new high performance avatar that is capable of producing 268 BHP and 270 Nm of torque!

Based on the EA211 engine, the engine gets its performance boost from a monoscroll turbocharger and an e-booster / electric supercharger. The engine is VW’s way of showcasing the potential of combustion engines and it will be a while before we get to see this engine make its way into VW's production spec vehicles. The main 3-cylinder powerplants in VW’s entry level models will remain the 1.0L, 3-cylinder TSI and 1.4L, 3-cylinder TDI.

The 1.0L TSI features turbocharging and direct injection. Power output is rated at 114 BHP in the Golf and either 94 BHP or 109 BHP in the Polo. The maximum torque is 160 Nm for the 94 BHP variant and 200 Nm for the engines with higher power ratings.

The 1.4L, 3-cylinder TDI is tuned to produce three power ratings i.e. 74 BHP, 88.5 BHP and 103 BHP, with a torque range of 210 to 250 Nm. The new TDI engine complies with the EU6 emission standard and has replaced the 1.2L, 3-cylinder TDI and 1.6L, 4-cylinder TDI engines in the Polo in international markets (neither one of the engines are offered in the India spec Polo).

VW also unveiled a 2.0L, 4-cylinder TDI engine for light duty vehicles such as the Multivan and Transporter. At present, four versions of the engine cover a power range of 83 BHP to 201 BHP and a torque range of 220 to 450 NM.

Re: VW reveals high performance 1.0L, 3-cylinder TSI

Thank goodness for innovations, imagine an American from the 50-60s quoting with his drawl : "there is no replacement for displacement" - brought forward in to today's time!
