In an era of downsizing and ironically ‘choking’ emission norms, Volkswagen has just unveiled a new 6.0L, W12, TSI engine at the 36th International Vienna Motor Symposium. The new engine features a combination of Audi's FSI direct injection and Bentley's TMPI multi-point injection.

The engine produces 600 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 900 Nm of torque @ 1,500 – 4,500 rpm. Depending on the vehicle model, the engine is capable of taking a car from 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds and hitting top speeds of over 300 km/h.

VW will also use an adaptive engine suspension with hydraulic basic damping, which uses electromagnetic actuators to counter engine vibrations with phase-shifted counter-vibrations, in order to improve NVH levels. This engine will reserved for premium luxury vehicles in the VW family. Media reports speculate that the new power-plant could make its debut in the Bentley Bentayga SUV.

Comes as such a breath of fresh air! While everyone is talking of downsizing - and even F1 cars are running puny 1.6L motors - it's great to see a manufacturer investing in big engines.

With the stratospheric pricing of these cars, not like they are going to go mass market anyway. In my books, some exotics should stick with 10 - 12 cylinder engines only.

My god, respect to VW for making a massive engine. Those figures look conservative, I'm sure with a tune it will go much higher than that. So this will be in the Bentleys, and the A8.

Hats off and respect to VW making such a massive engine with such figures. VAG has a huge variety of engines and they just do not stop , they have the gearboxes, they do the tuning right and i can only dream what a blast this engine would be.

Glad to see something like this still in the works. Well done VW. Maybe two of these welded together could go in the new Veyron? 12 litres W16 and 1200BHP sounds about right.

You mean W24 . That should be interesting.

But seriously, Kudos to few car/engine makers who still push the envelope once in a while. These guys made the Lupo (3Cyl Diesel, 30+ KMPL) a decade ago and still have the nerve to challenge a ferrari or a Lambo with this! Yay...!

For a company that owns Bugatti and its over-engineered 8 liter W16 engine, this must be closer to home! In fact, the folks at VW must have cringed at the (comparatively) reduced design challenge this new engine might have represented in comparison!
