Earlier in January 2015, Steve Cannon, Mercedes-Benz U.S. CEO revealed that the company was mulling a Mercedes-Maybach treatment on the next-gen E-Class. 8 months later, the car has finally been spied on test in Europe.

The test mule is heavily camouflaged. It seems to have a longer wheelbase compared to the current-gen E-Class. It sports the signature Maybach grill and headlamps which appear similar to the MM S-Class. Even the front bumper and alloy wheels are brand new. The rear profile shots do indicate that it appears similar to the 2015 S-Class with trapezoidal twin muffler tips. It has a panoramic roof too.

These are the first images of the car being spotted and more details on the interiors or engine options are not known.

This car will fill the gap between the E-Class and the 2015 S-Class (which at the moment is wide). Also, it will be the first time that the Maybach brand will be associated with another car from the Mercedes stable apart from the flagship S-Class.

If it manages to fill the gap - nothing like it. I am worried though that it might just result in higher pricing for the S Class though!
In a way, this would be the perfect chauffeur driven / self driven mix use car for most cities - where the S turns out to be quite a handful.

Could this replace the LWB E Class that is sold in China?

So there is no chance of a Phantom fighter from daimler? They really have diluted what was left of Maybach,which was nothing to brag about. I wonder how would Maybach 57 owners feel now!

I think they already sell L version of E-class in China . Perhaps they want to name & price this differently

Who knows if they actually price close to S class instead of E - they won't like to Dilute Maybach Brand

If it ever does make it to India, it will be a CBU. With the E350 priced at 60 lacs ex-showroom, this will go well above 70 lac, maybe even above the CLS, which would bring this in the 80-90lac territory. From there on add the CBU road taxes and you're looking at a cool 1cr+- on road. Wonder how that will affect the S350 in India.

It will be interesting to see what they do with this. It would probably make the already insignificant CLS (in the Indian market), completely redundant.

So well just how AMG is the 'Performance' division the Maybach will be the 'luxury' division.

I see the SUV's getting the Maybach versions too in the future.

So now we know why Mercedes shut down the Maybach division in 2012, coz they had larger more profitable plans

Makes sense from the business POV. Mercedes has expanded its product range at the lower end (CLA etc.), but there's not been any addition at the higher end of its sedan range.

The S-Class used to be a 70 - 80 lakh luxo-barge at one time. Now, it's well over a crore. There's a big (intentional) gap between the E-Class & S-Class now.

The E-Class Maybach will easily fill that gap. More legroom than the regular E, but lesser luxury than the S-Class to keep that differentiation.

This is the best way to understand the new Maybach brand. If they can replicate AMG formula, then you would see CLA Maybach
