2017 Fiat 124 Spider unveiled!

Fiat has just taken the wraps off an all-new version of their iconic roadster, the 124 Spider. Boy, doesn't it look sweet! While the chassis is based on the Mazda MX-5, the new 124 Spider gets Fiat's lovely 1.4L T-Jet off the Abarth 500, which is good for 160 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. This is a combo should ensure that the car would be a hoot to drive!

I am one of those people who is desperately waiting for Mazda to make an entry into India with their MX-5, but that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. I hope that at least Fiat brings the 124 Spider here. Unlike Mazda, they've got a solid infrastructure in place, and I'm sure that there would be a lot of takers for a small-but-really-cool fun-to-drive roadster such as this.

Looks pretty incredible! If they price it well, this will sell like a hot cake.

Re: 2017 Fiat 124 Spider unveiled!

Did it need DRLs? or those alloys? or the grooves in the bonnet?
The best angles are the rear three quarters. It looks a little bit like a Viper in the 3rd shot.

While this looks too Mx-5 than a 124, but does anyone feel that a chrome/wiremesh (the kind on the original version of Punto in India or even the Cromodora grille on 1100D's) would have made it more Fiatish?

Unsurprising because it is a Mazda MX-5 Miata under the skin . Same platform, same underpinnings, new styling.

The side & rear profiles are good, but I find the front incredibly ugly.

Is it based on the previous generation Miata? Looks quite like it. Anyway, I feel that the current gen miata is better looking than this. This actually might be a little ugly. The tjet might make it better than the Mazda though! Now will fiat get Dino as well .

The front grille could certainly have been designed better. I think horizontal bars, instead of the mesh currently in use, would have made the car look pretty.

See the 1974 Fiat 124 photos attached below this post.
This is supposed to be a homage to that car and is just a badge job over the latest ND generation Miata but with one difference. The engine is the 1.4 Turbo from the Abarth 500 with 140hp for Europe and 160hp for US. Don't know how many in this forum heard the Abarth 500 engine, it is the finest sounding 4 cylinder ever. Braaaaap.

Well this is a MX-5, specifically the ND version and is made in Hiroshima, Japan exclusively with engines shipped from Italy.

Nope. Current gen ND Miata.
This is a homage with retro looks. Look at the grille, front headlamps and tail light to see the resemblance.

See the grille of the original 124. See the resemblance. See the intention.

This, IMHO is a fantastic car which will cost Civic dollars in the US. Imagine this coming to India at 14-15L if locally assembled. Not that it would ever happen. Fiat will bring it fin as a halo CBU and price it at 50L and act surprised when they sell three units over 2 years.

Here's a video on the styling aspects of this car. I think it looks fantastic! A very desirable small car.

Fiat is heading back into WRC with an Abarth version of the Fiat 124 Spider, a source close to the tuning company has told PistonHeads. The car will compete in what's said be a new sports car category designed to restore some petrolhead credibility to the supermini-dominated series. The likely entry date looks to be 2017, when the 124 Abarth road car will also go on sale.

Just announced and already going racing
That car, also based on the Mazda MX-5, is expected to use 160hp and 190hp versions of the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder used by the 500 Abarth. That's up from the standard 140hp used by the recently announced 124 Spiderand should create a gutsy little sports car given the Mazda's 1000kg weight. The source also claims there'll be a version making over 200hp from the same 1.4 engine to tie in with the rally car's introduction.
The road-going Abarth comes with a beefed up front bumper to create a sporty counterpoint to the rather mild-looking 124 and will be sold with an optional matt black bonnet to draw comparisons with the Abarth tuned 124 Stradale homologation car built in the early 70s to satisfy entry requirements for the 124 rally car. It'll also be available with a hardtop like that car.

The last time Fiat was seriously involved with world rallying was the golden period in the late 70s/early 80s when it won the World Rally Championship three times with the iconic 131 Abarth, once with Markku Alen at the wheel, the last time in 1980 with Walter Rohrl.

The 1980s was the Golden era
Fiat's return to rallying via Abarth has long been rumoured and the tuning arm has competed on a national level with versions of the 500 and Punto, but this looks finally to be happening (although at Fiat, plans are always subject to change).
Abarth itself is going great guns with global sales on course to hit 10,000 a year, up from around 7,000, the head of the brand told us. That's purely based on versions of the 500, latest of which is the hardcore 190hp Biposto two-seater (the Punto version was discontinued). The range will expand further with an Abarth version of the Fiat 500X small SUV, the brand said, giving three models in total. We're told the UK vies with Italy for the title of world's largest Abarth market, and the UK arm tells they're increasing the number of Fiat dealerships authorized to sell Abarths from 68 to 103. Stick a gleaming red 124 Abarth Stradale with matt black bonnet and hardtop on the forecourt and you'll get us through the door.

Re: 2017 Fiat 124 Spider unveiled!

Fiat now says it will race this 300 horsepower, rear-drive Abarth 124 hardtop in 2017.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider unveiled!-c7ls9mucidvonyfiphla.jpg

It has been stripped and caged, with an interior covered in Alcantara. The car gets four-way adjustable dampers, a six-speed sequential transmission, a limited slip differential, and other rally modifications like those tough OZ wheels.

The regular Abarth 124 Spider gets a 1.4-liter turbo four cylinder engine with 160 horsepower. This rally version gets a 1.8 tuned up to 300 horsepower.

The car has been built to the FIA’s R-GT class, which allows in rear-drive sports cars to run in competitive rallies, even WRC events.

Looks brilliant and will surely add a bit of magic to the tracks and circuits. Will be amazing if Fiat can take this incredible one to some of WRC rounds as they claim.

The rally-spec car sounds amazing! But what is a little more relevant to the market is the street-going version, so here's some details of it.

Italy's version of the latest Mazda MX-5 Miata has received the Abarth treatment which brings a sportier exterior appearance backed by a more powerful heart and all wrapped in a lightweight package. The performance roadster comes with a two-tone black and white paint contrasted by the red accents noticeable on the side mirror caps, brake calipers, and on the front bumper.

It wears a slightly more aggressive body kit with beefier bumpers, more pronounced side skirts, and a more imposing rear end with quad exhaust tips and additional vents. The larger 17-inch wheels contribute to make the 124 Spider look meaner and come paired with Brembo brakes featuring front aluminum calipers.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir gasoline engine developing 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It helps the Abarth 124 Spider go from 0 to 62 miles (100 kilometers) per hour in 6.8 seconds and top out at 143 mph (230 kph.) Output is channeled to the road through either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional sequential transmission with paddles installed behind the steering wheel.

It comes as standard with a "Record Monza" exhaust system providing a "beautiful growling sound" and also has a mechanical limited-slip differential. Add into the mix an extremely low weight of just 2,337 pounds (1,060 kg) and you get a nimble roadster that should be a joy to drive.

The Abarth 124 Spider is scheduled to go on sale in September and will carry a starting price of €40,000 in Europe.

So the Abarth gets only 10hp more than the regular FIAT version! Disappointing IMHO.

They really have to think beyond that 1.4 engine.
