UK: Ssangyong Rexton launched with a new 2.2L engine

Ssangyong has launched the 2016 Rexton in the United Kingdom, now with a new 2.2 litre diesel engine.

The Rexton has been around in the UK since 2001 and has witnessed several updates since. After this latest update, this SUV will be available with an all-new 2.2 litre, 4-cylinder, Euro 6-compliant diesel engine which produces 176 BHP @ 4000 RPM and 400 Nm of max torque between 1400-2800 RPM.

This new e-XDi220 2,157 cc engine will be available with either a 6-speed manual or a Mercedes-Benz 7-speed E-Tronic gearbox. Both these transmission options are available with a 4x4 option only with low ratio, which splits torque equally between the front and rear axles, while off-roading. The combined fuel efficiency for the manual and automatic variants is 40.4 and 38.1 mpg respectively (i.e. 14.28 kmpl and 13.51 kmpl respectively).

It is possible that this engine and transmission options might make its way to the Indian Rexton and Mahindra models in the future.

The 2016 Rexton is available in 4 variants - SE, EX, EX auto and ELX auto. Both 5 and 7 seating configurations are available.

The Rexton is manufactured in South Korea and imported into the UK.

M&M does not have many issues with engine anyway but if they bring in more reliable tech from Rexton to Indian M&M vehicles, they will make a leap forward. Of course the engine with Euro 6 compliance would be good anyway.

Just noticed - the rear hatch door glass looks so cool. It's so wide and gels so well into D pillars.

Re: UK: Ssangyong Rexton launched with a new 2.2L engine

The current 5 cylinder engine is one of the strongest points about the current Rexton sold in India. It is one of the smoothest in the segment and makes ample Power and Torque, although it can be tuned much better for broader torque spread.

It is the ownership experience that ruins the experience, not the engine. My close friend owns one, and most of the ownership experience was nothing short of a nightmare. The list of niggles runs into hundreds if i count them from day 1, many of which are still not sorted. The Mahindra workshops are not well equipped/trained to handle this vehicle. Most of the Mahindra workshops do not even accept this vehicle even for emergency repairs. This car has spent months in total sitting in the workshop waiting for either spares or technical inputs from factory team. Then there is no extended warranty available beyond the standard 3 year warranty, XUV-500 has 5 years coverage after getting extended warranty. Some of the experiences are mentioned in this thread.

IIRC the smaller 4 cylinder engine was also showcased in the last Auto Expo. Also, a facelift for the Rexton is due soon.

Lousy SUV. To start with, it's based on the 1st-generation M-Class which is among the worst Mercedes' ever made. When the Rexton was being developed, SsangYong was going through turmoil (change of owners, scandals, no $$$$), so it's not surprising that the child of that time turned out to be such a poor SUV.

It was a thought that crossed my mind, considering the output figures and engine size, but we will have to wait and see.

M&M should now concentrate on two fronts for its nextgen XUV500. Bringing down the kerb weight by at least 100kg and cranking the power output to at least 160hp as per technical specs.

The second thing is size. Third row seat space is appalling. Need to redesign the interior to squeeze in a bit more volume for people to sit at the back.
