BMW to re-introduce the 8-Series in 2020?

BMW is working on a new 8 series flagship coupe as an opponent for the Mercedes S-Class Coupe and the Bentley Continental GT.

The new model will arrive in 2020, with BMW still to decide whether it’s going to be a classic two-door coupe with a convertible counterpart or in the form of a four-door coupe.

The whole project is still a big secret inside BMW but sources indicate that the two proposals have already been put before BMW chairman Harald Krueger, with the final decision still pending.

After BMW decides which way to go, the new 8 Series will be previewed in the form of a concept in 2018. One of the reasons why BMW wants to expand its line-up upwards is the success and greater profitability Mercedes enjoys with the S Class and its derivatives in the markets of China and USA.

BMW carried their own internal studies and found out that Mercedes could earn up to 30,000 euros (around $33k in current exchange rates) on each S Class model they sell. This means that Mercedes is already earning up to 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion in current exchange rates) more than BMW with the S Class compared to the 7 Series.

And BMW wants a slice of that pie.

Re: BMW working on new 8 series flagship coupe

A great looking BMW design after a long time IMO, specially the side profile and the boot.

All of their current and upcoming cars look just too average and executive (Except for the M versions which they try to brighten up with huge cuts in the bumpers and wild colours!)

BMW to re-introduce the 8-Series in 2020?

BMW is planning to re-introduce its flagship 8-Series by 2020. The car will be pitted against the S-Class Coupe and the Bentley Continental GT.

It is still uncertain whether BMW will bring the new 8-Series in a 2-door or 4-door avatar. The car is likely to be built at BMW's Dingolfing factory in Germany. The car will share technology, components, etc. with the sixth-generation 7-Series. A pre-production concept of the 8-Series will be showcased in 2018.

With the introduction of the 8-Series, BMW will strengthen its presence in the lucrative luxury car market. A senior manager suggested that this car will be priced much lower than the subsequent Rolls-Royce models.

The 8-Series was in production from 1989 to 1999 as a 2-door coupe. In 2013, BMW and Pininfarina displayed the Gran Lusso Coupe concept, which was most likely to be the new-generation 8-Series. However, back then, the company officially denied any plans of the brand's resurrection.

The original 8 series was a BEAUTIFUL car. These sketches are a different look altogether and in my opinion don't do justice at all to the original version lookswise.

But then again, the 5 and 7 series are no lookers more so when compared to the earlier straight lined versions. Its only the 3 series that looks like poetry in motion just standing still.

Someone out there needs to go retro!

So true! But compared to the new 7 series with its oversized headlights connected to the grille, I think this looks far better!

How I wish BMW retained their trademark corona rings or improved on them! I remember how I used to gawk at them before all 'em DRLs and LEDs became the rage!

Re: BMW to re-introduce the 8-Series in 2020?

BMW's new flagship coupé has been caught testing in Germany; it's due to go on sale in 2018.

Being so closely related to the 7 Series, it’s likely that the 8 Series will share engines with its saloon sibling. This means that an iPerformance-badged plug-in hybrid will feature in the range, as well as the entry-level 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel found in the 7 Series and a more performance-orientated 4.4-litre V8 from the 750i xDrive, accompanied by all-wheel drive. A V12-engined model will come later in the car’s life cycle.
