BMW confirms quad-turbo inline-6 diesel engine!

At the 2016 Vienna Engine Symposium, BMW has confirmed it's all-new, top-of-the-line oil burner powerplant - an in-line 3.0L i-6 with FOUR turbochargers, which will produce 394 PS of power and a humongous 760 Nm of torque (between 2,000-2,500 RPM).

Scheduled to be planted into the 750d xdrive sedan later this year, this quad-turbo unit will be paired with an 8-speed XF automatic transmission.

BMW claims that this engine will propel the luxury sedan from a standstill to 100 kmph in around 4.5 seconds, while being 5% more fuel-efficient than the outgoing tri-turbo, straight six diesel unit.

Top speed will be electronically limited to 250 kmph.

The objectives were clear: More power, better response, high-revving capability, and creating a convincing "V8 fighter." Based on BMW's new modular engine layout, it is testament of that architecture's capabilities. The spectacular design features four exhaust turbochargers - two high-pressure chargers and two low-pressure ones. In terms of turbocharging, the main change was replacing the massive low-pressure turbocharger with two smaller common exhaust turbochargers; they came at a cost advantage and without a weight penalty.

Beautiful numbers, but the sheer complexity of having 4 turbos is scary from a reliability / servicing / maintenance / repair point of view. These cars aren't exactly reliability darlings either.

The 550d already makes similar power & torque (381 horses & 740 Nm torque), although that's also a complex tri-turbo (related link).

If BMW wants more power, they should just get an 8-cylinder diesel like Audi / Porsche. Between 2 more cylinders or 2 more turbos, I'll always choose the former .

Buggati Chiron`s image of the only car on road with quad turbo will be dampened by this new engine from BMW. Ofcourse power figures will not be a match with Chiron`s 16 cylinder behemoth which has 2 stage turbocharging. However I am very much interested to see how these 4 turbochargers does the duty here and I believe BMW hasn`t shared any information on this.
Talking about the sheer complexity involved here, I don`t want to own a car with this engine without a good warranty.

Pardon me for going off topic but Another Iconic Bugatti, the Gorgeous EB110 is also a quad turbo V12.

BMW does have over 3 decades of experience of making monster turbo petrol engines if you include the M12 from its F1 experience. But diesel is a totally different ball game.

Mods: I recall this topic was earlier discussed in a separate forum. Probably can be combined.

Apparently its cheaper to produce this engine than the tri turbo, which had a large turbo for low speed boost. The large turbo was expensive, and using 2 small turbos is cheaper.

Also the torque in this is limited by the ZF box.

Can't wait to see how this feels like the next M550D.

Aren't the smaller turbos there for low speed boost ? Larger the turbo, longer it takes to spool.

What I thought too. But the press release mentions the large low pressure turbo is replaced. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.

BMW Says Goodbye To Quad-Turbo Diesel Engine.

BMW X5 and X7 M50d Final Edition models mark end of B57S engine.

The B57S is one of the only quad-turbocharged diesel engines in existence. Set to be discontinued in September, which is too complicated and too expensive to keep running and abiding the legislation regarding harmful emissions.

Introduced for the first time in 2016, on the 750d model.

Re: BMW confirms quad-turbo inline-6 diesel engine!

A huge kudos to BMW. Many brands are discontinuing these kind of manic engines due to stringent environmental laws. We get this in the X7 M50d and the 750d. Hope this engine comes in a 5 series as well, it would be a monster to drive and if that situation happens a drag race between a 550d and an M5 would be enthralling.
