"Norway will ban the sale of all fossil fuel-based cars in the next decade, continuing its trend towards becoming one of the most ecologically progressive countries on the planet, according to reports.
About 24 per cent of the country's cars already run on electricity, and it is a heavy producer of renewable energy with more than 99 per cent of electricity covered by hydropower."

Speaking about the possible 2025 ban on non-electric cars, Elon Musk, chief executive of US electric car company Tesla Motors, lauded the announcement.

"Just heard that Norway will ban new sales of fuel cars in 2025," he wrote.

"What an amazingly awesome country. You guys rock!!".

Don't really know about the car scene there, but this time-frame might too overambitious.

They can stop production/import of fossil fuel powered cars, but replacing existing cars with new electric/hydrogen powered cars might need a lot of monetary incentives from the governments end.

There's a business interest here right? :uncontrol (Let's not debate)

I concur, 9 years from now may be way too early. Anyways small countries like Norway which are heavily invested in renewable tech are the only ones who can take this step. It might take close to thirty to fifty years for a country like the US to do this! Even if Norway manages to ban all fuel powered car sales, it will take a long time to remove all fuel powered cars from the road.
Elon Musk may want to shift Tesla's headquarters to norway in a few years :uncontrol

Norway should go one up and stop extracting and exporting hydrocarbons, then announce this ambitious plan to clean up their country by using clean energy while not polluting elsewhere, that's an ambitious plan, this is NIMBYism.

Elon Musk is happy that more favorable legislation is headed his way, depending on the government to legislate your enterprise to success sounds like a scam. I wish the model 3 doesn't end up being a Ponzi scheme.

This is not unique to Norway. The Dutch government has similar plans.

Scandinavian & Nordic Countries are very progressive & if they say they will do this, 99% out of a 100 they will achieve the target. People of these Countries support Govt. policies because they know they are in their best interest, much different to the scene in our Country, where every such move is retaliated against. Thats the reason why the Country fails to move forward. Eg. the 10yr + cars ban & 2000cc + vehicles ban are steps in the right direction but see stiff resistance in our Country. So we need a lot of introspection to do.

In my view it is unfair to compare the 10+ year ban and 2000+cc ban in our country to the proposed ban by the Nordic countries.. Here's why
1) Norway has proposed to introduce this in the future and has not come out with a litigation out of the blue. This way people/ automakers get 9 years to make adjustments unlike India where we are handed a sudden ban out of the blue.
2) india is a developing country. We need diesel for growth and to bring people out of poverty which is not something the Scandinavians have to deal with.
3) We need diesel vehicles to meet our co2 promises and commitments since they are more fuel efficient.
4) The auto market in Scandinavian countries gets 9 years to cope with such a ban while we indians start losing jobs and foreign investments instantly owing to the courts ruling... Does that sound fair?

The Norway decision is not really same as NGT decision.

1) NGT decision is not based on scientific evidence or reality. More importantly they have given no consideration regards transition and alternatives. They want it effective right away.

2) Norway decision is very different. They have given 9 year time for car makers to figure out how to make it happen. The EV cars are already on roads and quite popular. Now they have to figure out how to make it cheaper, and a 9 year period is enough time. JFK gave less time to NASA to figure out how to land a man on the moon and bring him back.

NGT is demanding that a 6 year old kid should throw away his toys and solve some calculus problems right away. Norway is making the same demand, but willing to wait until the kid turns 15. Is it the same thing? I don't think so.

Sorry to say, but the last part of your post is wrong. NGTs policy is very short sighted and really has no underlying proof.

I have a few questions regarding the move by NGT:
Our Family's situation:

We have a 9 year old Innova (2.5 V) which is doing fine at 66,000 kms. Should the ban be enforced, it would hurt us real bad financially. We can't afford 12 odd lakhs on a new car and the resale value would also take a hit.

I'm sure there are many like me who can't simply replace their cars.

Mod Note: Do NOT TROLL on Team-BHP. You have been warned & infracted before.

The scandinavians are extremely progressive on development and governance fronts. Wasnt it the PM of one of these who commutes on a bicycle? Imagine that in India!
9 years at least gives people time to adapt, unlike our hare brains who want to get things done yesterday! Plus, what I read is sales of new cars will be banned in 2025. SO you may still have some gas powered guys chugging along till failing an MoT or some such.

Norwegian government should similarly also come out with concrete legislation and approaches to control/stop oil companies from exploiting the north pole and causing significant damage to the ice cap and also prevent a build up of arm race of all places-- in the Arctic!

During March 2016, a total of 36.7 % of the vehicles registered were alternate/ plug in hybrid fuel vehicles. The figure is 5,102 in March, which was 36.7 percent of the total 13,875 registrations for the month.

They are already moving in this direction and within a decade, compliance may be 100 % unless some other crosswinds reach and revise the already decided deadline.

Well if all the nations of this world decide to do something similar - then Norway's economy will be in the dumps.
The so called Socialist welfare state that they run on is fueled by Oil and Gas exports to the entire world. (hey not much different from the Middle East, huh?) How will it run then??

OT: Norway seems to be going all out to preserve the environment!
