2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe revealed ahead of Detroit debut

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new E-Class coupe, ahead of its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017. The new E-Class is now available in four body lines: sedan, estate, all-terrain and coupe.

The coupe is based on the regular E-Class sedan, though the coupe-esque layout brings significant design differences between the two. The E-Class coupe gets a lower placed front grille, a long bonnet and a sloping roofline that integrates with the bootlid. The side profile is characterised by frameless windows and the missing B-pillar. The rear gets horizontal LED taillights and twin-exhausts.

The new E-Class coupe is 4,826 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and has a height of 1,430 mm. The car's wheelbase spans 2,873 mm, which is 113 mm longer than its predecessor.

On the inside, the E-Class coupe gets a dual-tone dashboard with wooden inserts. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen is standard with the car, while another 12.3-inch instrument-cluster display is being offered as an option. The company claims that the AC vents have been designed by taking inspiration from a turbine engine. The steering wheel gets touch control buttons, which help in controlling the instrument cluster as well as the infotainment screen. The car also gets a touchpad with controller on the centre console, which also supports handwriting recognition.

Like its predecessor, the new E-Class coupe will come with a range of petrol and diesel engine options. Initially, Mercedes will only be offering one diesel and three petrol engines, with power ranging from 181 BHP to 328 BHP. All these models will be equipped with a 9G TRONIC nine-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes will be adding more engine options, including the high-performance AMG variants, to the E-Class coupe line-up later in the car's lifetime.
