Volkswagen, true to its road map is on an onslaught of launching crossovers. The latest is the 'Tharu' to rival Jeep Compass. It is likely to be the sibling of Skoda's Karoq and will primarily it will rival the Compass in the Brazilian market.

VW Tharu will be manufactured in Argentina(Pacheco) in 2019, internally code-named ' silver bullet' it will replace the Fox series in the assembly line.

True to its naming of crossovers starting with the letter 'T' ( Tiguan, T Roc, T Cross, T Track...) Tharu is intended primarily for the South American markets and maybe India.

Not all crossovers will be present in all markets, e.g. T Roc will be for EU and China, Tharu for S A markets, etc.)

So for Brazil, VW will have the Tharu, T Cross and T Track apart from the Tiguan Allspace due for launch soon.

Decision on the India strategy will be taken this month, but going by the latest flip-flop of the government's policies it could hold back some of its project unless a clear road map is documented.

The hunger for VFM SUVs in our market in insatiable.
No amount of knee jerk, poorly thought, misguided policy from the Govt. can stop the SUV craze in our market.

The only thing which can stop products like these to succeed in our market, is the manufacturer itself.
For example, in this case, the only thing which can stop the Tharu from becoming a sale success, is Volkswagen themselves (Who have spent close to a decade in India, and still have no clue on what works here and what doesn't).

Hope? They had better rename it. Sounds very silly in the Indian context.

For one, "Tharu" is a valid surname. I remember my mother having a colleague called Jacob Tharu. And for another, it will cause confusion in Karnataka. Kannadigas have this habit of adding "u" to the end of any non-Kannada word used in Kannada. Like, "train" becomes "train-u" and "plan" becomes "plan-u". So Tharu is the Kannada-ised pronunciation of a Mahindra product!!

I don't think the VW Tharu, if it is launched in India, could be a Jeep Compass rival in pricing. The VW Tharu is based on the Skoda Karoq, which itself will be a VW Tiguan rival when it is launched. The Kodiaq is slightly smaller, but there isn't too much to separate Tiguan and Karoq in terms of size or space. The pricing of the Yeti in India (when it was available) should give a clue to how the Karoq would be priced, bearing in mind that the Karoq itself is a bigger car than the Yeti.

So, should we expect a badge-engineered VW to cost less than its Skoda sibling (and start at about Rs.8-10L less than a very similar Tiguan to challenge the Compass on pricing)? Not happening, I think.

The VW Tharu could be a rival to Compass in other markets, where the Compass is priced close to the Tiguan.

VW will not built the GOLF in Mexico, instead will make the Tharu. In Brazil too the Jeep Compass rival will be manufactured along with T ROC.

Work on another project, transforming the Skoda Karoq in a VW model. In addition to being bigger than the T-Roc, is smaller and simpler than the new Tiguan, preventing is a competitor – something important, since the new-generation Tiguan will also be produced in Mexico. And, for your business, you will have the ideal size to be a rival of the Jeep Compass

The Tharu (4.38 metres) is targeted to Latin America and China, and will be manufactured in Mexico and maybe in Argentina. India?

VW is likely to announce the production of 'Tharu' in Argentina tomorrow.

The VW Tharu is an intermediate sized SUV between the T-CROSS (which will be manufactured in Brazil) and the Tiguan, which will also be sold in MERCOSUR imported from Mexico. This model shares the platform of the Skoda Karoq.


The base model will be the T-CROSS, with length of about 4.15 metres, 1.6 engines and TSI 200, with prices between R $70000 and R $100 milmil reais, to compete with Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta, among others.

Above that, in the price range between R $100,000 and R $150,000 who enters the Tharu, with dimensions close to the current Audi Q3-4.38 meters, based on MQB platform-A1. This model will compete with the Jeep Compass, Hyundai ix35, among others.

From 2020, the automaker will produce a brand new SUV model there and will deliver it to the entire South American market.

On the engine, the Tharu is expected to receive 150 hp EA211 1.4 TSI engines in China, but the 1.2 TSI with 110 hp can be offered as well, both with seven-speed DSG.
