Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

Polestar, a subsidiary of Volvo Cars has unveiled their first car as a standalone company. It will be called as the Polestar 1 and the production is expected to start by mid-2019.

Polestar started out as a performance brand that tuned Volvo cars. It was later taken over by Volvo Cars to make performance road cars for the company. Currently it makes the 362 BHP Polestar variants of the S60 and V60 as well as performance upgrades for existing Volvo cars. From 2017 onward, Polestar will be a separate company in the Volvo group that will be focused on design and production of high performance electric cars.

The Polestar 1 is a two-door, four-seater coupe with a hybrid power plant. A maximum of 500 cars will be built per year and all those will be offered on a subscription basis. The car is based on Volvo's Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) however Polestar claims that their engineers have modified almost 50% of the platform. Polestar 1 measures 4,500 mm in length and compared to the Volvo S90, the wheelbase is 320 mm less and the rear has been shortened by 200 mm. The front to rear weight distribution of the car is in the ratio of 48:52. It also debuts the use of carbon-fibre on major body parts for the first time on a car of Volvo Group.

The Polestar 1 features dual electric motors putting out a combined 215 BHP that power the rear wheels. A 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine drives the front wheels. The combined output is claimed to be 592 BHP and 1,000 Nm of torque. It also gets a new torque vectoring system that sends the required power to wheels on either side instead of braking the inner wheel while cornering. It also features Ohlins continuously controlled electric suspension (CESi). In pure electric mode, the car behaves like a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with a claimed range of 150 km. Polestar expects that most customers would use the car in electric mode only for most of the trips.

The company has also laid out plans for their future vehicles – Polestar 2 and Polestar 3. The former is expected to start production by late 2019. Polestar 2 will be the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) from the Volvo Group and will compete against the Tesla model 3. Polestar 3 will be an SUV-styled vehicle which will be priced between the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 in terms of volumes and pricing.

More details about the subscription services were also disclosed. All Polestar cars will be signed on with a 2 or 3-year subscription at an all-inclusive monthly payment. The costs will include insurance and maintenance. Polestar will also provide additional services including concierge and on-demand services for customers at an added charge. E.g. a larger Volvo car when needed, booking a valet or a car wash at a convenient time, etc.

Polestar will also open dedicated spaces, that will give a preview, test drive and demonstrate the Polestar cars. They will not be housed in existing Volvo dealerships. Further, Polestar cars will be built in China under a joint venture formed between Volvo Cars and two other companies within the parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding.

Re: Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

It’s a separate company, but I don't see a brand identity here – Volvo inspiration is showing up inside out. This looks more like a S90 coupe.

The car looks fantastic! Wish they would open up and sell in India. I really like the design on the V40 and now this. Plus the name - How cool would it be to say, "I own a Polestar 1"

Re: Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

You can now order a 591bhp Polestar 1. Stunning performance hybrid coupe is now available for public consumption.

Quote:
Volvo’s performance arm Polestar has announced that it is taking deposits for its first full production model, the rather lovely Polestar 1.
For a sum totalling €2,500 or $2,500 or 20,000RMB, you can secure your place in the queue to purchase the company’s first ever hybrid GT car.

That deposit is fully refundable should you change your mind, though you might be swayed by some numbers. The Polestar 1 features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine up front, and a pair of electric motors.
In total, that equates to 591bhp, 782lb ft of torque and a 0-62mph time somewhere in the threes. Probably. Polestar also promises a range of 93 miles on a single charge, in pure EV mode (and, thus, rear-drive only mode).

It gets: big brakes, adaptive Ohlins suspension, significant use of carbon fibre around the body, and the same platform architecture that underpins the Volvo S90 (albeit trimmed front and back a bit).

Just 500 will be built, and Polestar is accepting deposits from 18 countries: the UK, China, United States, Sweden, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Spain, France, Portugal, Poland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Canada.

“With over 7,000 people interested in owning a Polestar 1 since its reveal,” explains Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath, “we are extremely encouraged by the passion shown for our product."
“We will now take the next steps towards delivering this car to our first customers.”

Re: Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

The rear of this car looks ugly to me.

Agree that this can very easily be mistaken for a Volvo. Esp from the inside. Save for the logo on the steering wheel everything is a straight lift from a Volvo's interior. Love the new interiors on the Volvo though so this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

What an absolutely gorgeous design, both inside an out. Really looks fetching in both white and black.

Cant stop wiping the drool off my face. I suppose this is what is called as minimalist design. Polestar has totally cracked it, I have to say.

Not to mention the supercool name, Polestar 1

Polestar 1 makes a stunning debut at Pebble Beach for North America.

Quote:
The Polestar 1 is on a world tour as after receiving its European debut earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the stunning coupe is now in Pebble Beach for its North American premiere. It’s an important event for the company considering United States is at the moment the car’s biggest market. Nearly 200 customers from the U.S. have signed on the dotted line to place a deposit for the plug-in hybrid performance car – the highest number of any country.

Re: Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

Saw the Polestar duo in Polestar office in Gothenburg. Looks impressive et al but then, I don't understand the rationale of not going full hog marketing it. There are no showrooms, they aren't shown in airports or in Volvo dealerships. Heck, the cars in their own office were locked. Can't touch and try inside. Don't understand what they are guarding. Tesla sells online but also has small showrooms to demo the cars. This very guard of secrecy pushed one prospect (a friend of mine) to buy a Tesla instead. No see, no buy.

Re: Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

The first Polestar model - the Polestar 1 high-performance plug-in hybrid recently appeared on the EPA website.

The all-electric range is 52 miles (83.7 km). That's excellent for a PHEV, but at the same time it's surprisingly low compared to the 93 miles (150 km) quoted by the company. All-electric range of 52 miles (83.7 km), total range of 470 miles (756 km)

Re: Polestar unveils their first car as an independent company

The Polestar 1 has entered the final phase of its production run, with the last example set to roll out of the factory in Chengdu, China later this year.

A three-year production run was planned initially, with capacity to build 500 units per year. However, only 65 examples were registered across the entire European market last year.

Only 25 examples of the limited edition Polestar 1 will be built.
