2018 Aston Martin DB4 GT Continuation - A new old car
It takes a team of 30 people at Aston' factory an estimated 4500 hours to build the new DB4 GT continuation (not accounting for time taken by suppliers). And just 25 will be produced.
This is not a renovation exercise. Aston is building the car from scratch by studying the original drawings and digitally scanning the original cars.
The engine is bigger at 4.2L, and now makes 340 bhp, but breathing through 3 carburetors. And paired with a non-synchronous, four-speed unit with straight-cut gears. So, engine and road speeds have to be matched by the driver by revv-matching and double de-clutching like in an old bus. And its a pain when you don't get it right. Those who watched Grand Tour will recall how Clarkson struggled with the gear shifts.
But this is no show piece. The Continuation has also been required to pass the same intense durability tests as Aston’s current endurance race cars, including a 2500-mile drive completed at Italy’s Nardo track last summer.
These cars aren’t road-legal and each costs GBP 1.5 million, and its fully sold out. Well done Aston!
