Ferrari under the skin - Exhibition at the Design Museum, London

Everything you've always wanted to know about how to drive a Ferrari, but were afraid to ask. In a nine minute lesson:

Warning: Do not try that at home if you'd like to come back for the lesson on the Lambo.

The car in the clip is a Ferrari 275 GTB, just one of many that can give you that heady experience.

Enzo Ferrari did not build a vehicle with his charismatic name on it until he was almost 50.

He started life as a passionate racing driver. Later on, he ran racing teams for Alfa Romeo and also his own name but the cars were always built by others. He was determined to build his own machine.

In March 1947, the first Ferrari engine burst into life.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Celebrating 70 years of this, an exhibition of the marque is on display at the Design Museum in London.

An update on the exhibition

Ferrari F40 1987 V8 3 litre 805 BHP, Chassis no: 78122

The F40 was built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ferrari.

It was the first production car to use carbon fibre and Kevlar composite bodywork derived from Formula One. It weighed 1100 kilograms.

The interiors were designed for true blue enthusiasts - NO ACCESSORIES other than air conditioning. Even without the comforts, collectors clamoured to buy it. Owner's have included Opera star Pavaroti, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, Sylvestor Stallone, rock star Eric Clapton etc.

At its launch it was the fastest road car ever produced.

re: Ferrari under the skin - Exhibition at the Design Museum, London

Ferrari 250 GTO 1962, V12, 3 litre 300 BHP

The GTO grew out of the highly successful 250 series. It had more power, a better suspension and an aerodynamic design to deliver speed as well as stability shown by its kicked-up butt.

GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato - meaning Ferrari intended to build 100 examples for homologation purposes since FIA excluded limited production cars from Group 3 Motorsport championship.

However, it is unlikely that Ferrari actually intended to build so many and some suggest that cars were switched around to complicate the FIA inspectors job.

In the end only 39 were built and have become the most valuable Ferrari of them all.

One of our members uses the initials of this car as his handle. And as you may have guessed, it is for good reason. It is considered to be the most iconic and significant Ferrari of them all. And no, that Jeep shown under the handle isn't a Ferrari.

Ferrari's most recent model:

LaFerrari Aperta 2017 V12 6.3 litre 800 BHP (Electric Motor 163 BHP)

The Aperta has a top speed of 350 kmph and accelerates to 200 kmph in 7.1 seconds. Ferrari is making just 209 examples of this car.

re: Ferrari under the skin - Exhibition at the Design Museum, London

Although Ferrari have a lot more models, the exhibition focused on those that contributed to building the Ferrari brand over the years.

There were lots of engines with details and specs and running chassis' like the one below of the Ferrari 250 LWB, V12 3 litre 250 BHP, 1957 model.
