Porsche 919 EVO - Distillation of performance What do you do when you decide to pull out of the World Endurance Racing especially when you are some as successful as Porsche. You are left with a team of brilliant minds bored out of their wits.
The Porsche 919 EVO is something that happens when you give these engineers a free hand. They already had a multiple race winner in the Porsche 919. No longer inhibited by the shackles of the legislations of the WEC, what we get is distilled essence of Porsche's know how to make a race car.
So gone are the fuel flow restrictions and the 2 Litre V4 sees output jump from 500 bhp to 720 bhp. The electric output jumps from 400 to 440 bhp.
The wings are bigger, so are the diffusers. The downforce is reported to be 53% over the equivalent car. Active drag reduction system has also been added for bump in top speed.
Porsche also added a four-wheel brake-by-wire system, different power steering and stronger suspension wishbones. Removal of the air conditioning, windscreen wiper, several sensors and the pneumatic jacks mean weight is down by 39kg to just 849kg. Top Gear has reported that Porsche then took it to Spa and handed over the keys to Neel Jani and he turned out a 1m 41.770s lap around Spa faster than any Formula 1 car and 12 seconds faster than the original Porsche 919 from last years race. He averaged 153mph over the lap and topped up at 223mph.
This car in its current form is far from road legal, but imagine the possibilities when Porsche decides to join the current hyper car wars and challenge the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes AMG Project One and all they have to do is dust this prototype out of the shelves, put a bit of road legal makeup and sell it at a premium to the ever willing masses. |
