Mercedes A-Class launched with Renault Duster engine

You read that right. It might look like the "Future of the Automobile" lies in the hands of the ol' Renault Duster. But as some of you may already know, this isn't the first time Renault engines have been used by Mercedes in their cars. Renault have been engine suppliers to Mercedes for some time now.

The Mercedes Benz A 180d is powered by the 1461cc Renault Diesel engine and it’s essentially the same unit used in the Dacia lineup, bar the different ECU, alternator, AC compressor, start/stop function and some other parts.

It comes with a slight power bump and delivers 116PS (114hp / 85kW) and 260Nm (192lb-ft) of torque to the front wheels, through a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission. That’s slightly more than what you’d get in the Renault Duster dCi 110.

Mercedes-Benz claims the A180d needs 10.5sec for the 0-100km/h (0-62mph) sprint and has a top speed of 202km/h (126mph).

In addition, the Mercedes Benz A160D is being launched with the Renault Duster 85bhp engine.

So the next time you want to buy an SUV, don't give the Duster or the Terrano a miss. Red stripes regardless.

Some of the specific changes made to the engines by Mercedes include the engine mountings of the M270 petrol engine, as well as a special dual-mass flywheel, the starter is flanged onto the transmission and the alternator and the air-conditioning compressor also come from the Mercedes modular system.

Re: Mercedes A-Class launched with Renault Duster engine

2 valves per cylinder in a Mercedes ! This link offers some more tech stats. Sure, Mercedes & Renault have applied some tweaks to it, but that's just lipstick on a pig. This is a very, very old engine that is only suitable for old cars (Logan included). It's completely out of sync with current expectations (not revv-happy, sounds bad etc.). Am sure the Mercedes AT will extract the most out of the engine, but still, a terrible choice for an A-Class!

Next time anyone asks me about my Nissan Sunny, I'm going to tell them it's got a Mercedes motor under the hood .

Re: Mercedes A-Class launched with Renault Duster engine

I am sure now this Mercedes can run 3-5L kms without any engine issues and give very good FE while at it.

I hope Mercedes has worked on the emissions of this engine. All the K9K engines that I see on the road, are known to belch smoke and soot from the exhaust (hope I am using the right technical terms). It won't look nice if a shiny white Merc has a black patchy rear bumper.

Re: Mercedes A-Class launched with Renault Duster engine

Mercedes has been using Renault diesels (1.5 and 1.6) since ~2014 on their A and B class models. Their collaboration is more than engine sharing as Mercedes also has a few models based on Renault. For instance, the minivan Citan is a differently shelled Renault Kangoo (also Dacia Dokker) and so is the Smart ForFour which is based on the cute Renault Twingo. They even use the rugged Nissan Navara and call it the X Class.

Given the global nature of most manufacturers, it makes more business sense to use synergies and go with what works instead of trying to re-invent the wheel. I'm merely speculating here but there you go: Mercedes never really foresaw themselves making premium hatchbacks one day and never really saw the need for a smaller diesel engine. The minivan collaboration brought the 1.5 dCi to the table and perhaps Mercedes thought, 'why, not eh?'

Ironically, Renault and Mercedes compete head-to-head in F1 with their own engines.

There were others who went down this synergy route. Toyota was and never is a big fan of diesels. Their bet is big on petrol and hybrid tech and for that reason they went with BMW diesels (1.6 and 2.0) in 2015 for their Yaris and Avensis models in Europe. BMW Blog . Well, at that time you could buy a Toyota with a BMW heart!

Also, global aversion towards diesel engines force manufacturers to re-think their strategies and Mercedes is too proud to go knocking on VW or BMW's door for a small diesel.

Re: Mercedes A-Class launched with Renault Duster engine

Mercedes cannot justify the numbers in order for them to design their own small capacity engines hence it taps into its Renault alliance. The number of 1.5dCI engines sold are few so it hardly matters. The 1.6 engine is supposed to be really good though and sells in large numbers. It was also used in the w203 C Class as a low emission version
