BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled

BMW has unveiled the new 8 Series Coupe. The car is expected to replace the 6 Series in the company's model line-up. Initially, the car will come in M850i xDrive petrol and 840d xDrive diesel variants, while an M8 version is expected to be launched at a later date. Deliveries are expected to commence by the end of this year.

The car measures 4,851 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width and 1,346 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,822 mm. It comes with a fuel tank measuring 68 litres and a boot space of 420 litres. The 8 Series is longer and wider, but shorter in height than the 6 Series.

At the front, the 8 Series gets an angular BMW kidney grille with a chrome strip surrounding the two halves and a pair of slim LED headlamps. The company claims that the lights offer illumination up to 600 m. The car has a sloping roof and rides on 20-inch rims shod in 245/30 and 275/30 section tyres at the front and rear respectively. The rear of the car gets a lip spoiler, wraparound LED tail lamps and a bumper with dual trapezoidal exhaust vents and air vents at both ends.

On the inside, the 8 Series gets a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. It sports a two-tone leather interior with a dark dashboard and brown seats and stainless-steel mesh trim strips. The gear selector and other buttons on the centre console are finished in glass.

The M850i is powered by a 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine that develops 523 BHP @ 5,500 rpm and 750 Nm of torque @ 1,800-4,600 rpm. The 840d draws power from a 3.0-litre, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder diesel engine that produces 315 BHP @ 4,400 rpm and 680 Nm @ 1,750-2,250 rpm. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to all the four wheels. The car gets Comfort, Eco Pro, Sport and Sport+ drive modes and comes equipped with features like adaptive cruise control, lane assist, lane departure warning and cross traffic alert. It also comes with panoramic view cameras and a reversing assistant that steers the vehicle when reversing over a distance of up to 80 metres on the same course as the last completed forward parking manoeuvre.

Re: BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled

Beautiful looking car and gives us major clues about what the new 3 might look like inside and out. The spyshots have already given us a good idea but this along with the new X5 just confirms what we all knew.

I just have one question for all the bhpians. Would you buy the 8 series over the 911? The 911 won't have 500 + bhp but will be lighter and more nimble and around the same price.

The BMW 8 series isnt exactly in the supercar section. Its more of a luxury sports car. Or super luxury car. Either ways, the 8 series should lock horns with the S-class coupe, the Bentley Continental, Rolls Royce Wraith and so on.

Whereas the 911 would go head on with the Huracan, the 488 and likes.

But the 8 series is one fine looking car. This looks better than the S coupe. Defo on the shopping list. And to answer your question, I would rather have multiple super luxury cars over multiple supercars. The 911 is a great car, if i pick the 911 turbo or GT3 RS, it will only be after buying a couple super luxury cars. Im sure some would go the other way round, if at all.
To each to their own I guess.

When I compare the 911 to the 6 series or now the 8 series, I'm talking about the base Carrera. It's around the same price as the 850 also has 4 seats and can be an everyday car. The turbo and the GT3 are in another league. Its the turbo that will go up against the lambos and the ferraris but the base 911 will go up against this car.

X5, along with the upcoming X8 has weird toothy big grille designs - whereas I quite like the 8 coupe with its sleeker inverted type grille.

After almost a decade - BMW produces a design thats modern yet looks good to my eyes. They had lost their design edge otherwise to Mercedes, Audi and even Volvo!

The 850 will have 4 seats which can be used. Adults will not fit into the rear seats of the 911. I don't think the 8 and the 911 are competitors in any sense.

Re: BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled

Though i like the design of this car, still it feels like a new gen 6 series coupe which is badged to be an 8 series for people to relate to the old 8'er.

Re: BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled

In continuation of my above post here are some comparo pics (Source: Bimmerpost) of the 6 series & recently launched 8 series;

BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled-3.jpg

BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled-22.jpg

BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled-12.jpg

Looking at these pics its clear that this is the new gen 6 series badge engineered to be 8 series to attract more sales & in turn making it premium, not cool at all BMW
8 series deserved to be less bulky, more stealthy & definitely needed to get those pop up headlights back.

I'm not sure about you guys who drive Bimmers, but to an outsider who just looks at the pics and designs - I think BMW is losing it fast. 8 series is an exception though and I actually like the looks.

But like you point out above - they has been showing some signs of desperation lately to fill all numbers from 1 to 9, rather than innovation. 1 series couple became 2 series, 3 series coupe became 4 series, 5 GT became the new 6 series, 6 series became the 8 series. X4 was another lame attempt as well.

Re: BMW 8 Series Coupe unveiled

That thing is absolutely massive. Its like a grand tourer of massive proportions. Definitely a looker though, and for someone who can afford to add it to his multi million dollar garage, will certainly constitute a lovely GT.

Interiors look a little spartan however- would have expected a little more fancy looking interior. Too sterile for this class of product.

How many ever models they add, the 3 models which define the BMW brand will always remain to be 3, 5 & 7 series. Rest all are somewhat derivations of these 3.
