Re: USA: Trump planning to impose 10-fold tariff on car imports

What has happened here is deal-making 101 (colloquially known as GIVE AND TAKE). Both parties come out happy with what is achieved.

Europe wins because there is no 10 or 25% tariffs on cars exported. For Europe, automobile industry is very significant. US wins because it eases pressure on American farmers if Europe starts importing Soybeans. Plus, there is promise of further negotiations on importing natural gas and zero tariffs on import of industrial goods. But there is loser in this, and that is China. Just read the tone of the article in mouthpiece of Xi Jinping:

Implications of EU-US trade truce for China

Well, the Europeans feel Trump was outsmarted. Whether Trump uses that to make claims is entirely up to him, you can’t blame the EU for that.

We will see about the re-election. Technically, last time he had less votes than Hillary, but the American system is of course a bit special on how you go from individual votes to State representation.

The most worrying thing is that I don’t see a credible Democratic candidate.

@Hayek; and @Jeroen; You are correct. Trump has no international trade sense. He is a mix of populism, PR and one may say silliness. He brings in a law, tries to stick with it and then quietly backs off.

Re: USA: Trump planning to impose 10-fold tariff on car imports

Trump wants more U.S. cars sold in Japan, but buyers are shunning them and the problem can’t be solved through tariffs!

Quote:
only 0.3 percent of the 3.2 million cars sold this year in the Asian country were made by American companies, even though Japan doesn’t impose tariffs on auto imports.
Quote:
In comparison, Japanese brands are doing much better in the United States, where they hold a 40-percent market share despite America’s import tariffs of 2.5 percent on cars and 25 percent on trucks
That’s a reality President Donald Trump appears to ignore (willingly or not) as he strives for better access to Japan for U.S. cars.

If you have read the latest book on Trump by Bob Woodward, like I have, you will realise that Trump literally knows nothing about economics. His every decision is based on his salesman instincts, what will sell with his base. It is time to stop looking into deeper strategies in his decisions.
