Beetle will be back!

Volkswagen Beetle to return as a four-door electric car.

According to a report, Volkswagen is considering a four-door Beetle with an electric powertrain and even the top bosses at VW have hinted on this. But, this is not currently in the pipeline and will have to wait for other newer electric models to launch first. VW head Herbert Diess and the brand's design boss, both hinted that the four-door electric Beetle is very much possible.

In an interview to a UK-based magazine, Klaus Bischoff said, "Our duty is to get the volume [ID] models under way. These cars have super-complicated technology and if you do too much, it's an overload. Then we [can] move into more exotic cars and the field of emotion."

Bischoff added, "The Beetle of today is a very attractive two-door coupe or convertible, but it is limited in the amount of cars that it can sell because it's a niche. If you look at MEB, the shortest wheelbase is the ID and if you took that and did the Beetle on it, you have plenty of room so there's no compromise in functionality any more. So it could be a very attractive car."

The report also says that Bischoff has already made a sketch of the electric four-door Beetle and will take at least 3-4 years before it gets approved from the top management. The electric Beetle will underpin I.D. Crozz concept car and will get the rear wheel drive (RWD) system. A single electric motor will give power to the Beetle with max power of 169 bhp, which will come through the rear axle.

That is a great news. A yellow Beetle is parked in my apartment complex and it looks really nice, with the history of this model this is not supposed to be discontinued. A electric variant will definitely help to re-structure the Beetle brand again.

The VW Beetle is back. Albeit in an all new Electric avatar.

Volkswagen R&D boss Frank Welsch had earlier confirmed that the current 2011 Beetle will be the model's last generation, once its production ends, next year. This is the second generation of the iconic car's revival as a front-wheel drive in 1997.

Now, Volkswagen chiefs are considering a revolutionary new VW Beetle. If green-lit, the new car will adopt a battery-powered electric powertrain. The new bug also aims to move away from its trademark two-door body style to a four-door set-up. It may even use the rear-wheel drive seen in the original ‘Type 1’ 1945 Beetle. This model would be based on the MEB architecture – VW’s flexible electric vehicle architecture which is to underpin the carmaker’s upcoming range of electric models under its new ID badge. The first of these to arrive will be the ID hatchback, next year.

VW boss Herbert Diess is keen to introduce a greater number of “emotional” cars to the Volkswagen range, alongside its more standard contemporary models. The Beetle – being the firm’s most storied nameplate – is considered a strong contender to take on this role.

The first of these “emotional” models will be the ID Buzz microbus, which is inspired by the classic VW camper van. Volkswagen will launch its more mainstream electric vehicles before the microbus' scheduled arrival in 2022. In addition to the ID hatchback, it will launch production versions of the ID Crozz SUV and ID Vizzion sedan – both previously seen as concepts. A larger electric SUV is also due.

The design boss confirmed that he has already made a sketch of how a four-door Beetle might look on the MEB platform; but also added that it would be two or three years before a decision to approve such a car for production would be taken.

VW's Beach Buggy as an Electric Concept will be revealed at the Geneva Motor show.

Volkswagen just dropped a pair of teaser photos for a new dune buggy concept, based not on the outgoing Beetle but the company’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform.

The classic rear-engined beach buggy is now reimagined as an all-electric dune hopper, and though the teaser photos don’t reveal all the details, the core elements appear to be present. The body is all curvy and swoopy, the roof is open, and there are no doors. The only thing missing is a properly vintage coat of crazy metallic paint, though the teasers suggest the concept will wear a garish shade of green.

Volkswagen has unveiled the I.D. Buggy concept at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Volkswagen I.D. Buggy takes its laid-back persona seriously. The only things protecting driver and passenger are the reinforced windshield, rear Targa bar, and a foldable black tarp, should the going get too tough. The interior is totally weatherproof, painted in a waterproof finish, and some of the same Fern Green exterior accents carry over to the cabin.
