BMW to end diesel car sales in North America

America had, at best only warmed up to diesels in its entire history of car buying. That is a big signal coming from the biggest car market in the world.

The manufacturers are listening as well - after Toyota and Honda's pledge to eliminate diesels from their line-up (two of the biggest popular car makers in US), now luxury car maker BMW has planned to eliminate diesel engines entirely in the nation. The only two power-trains to be sold in America from 2019 would be gasolene and electric with the focus increasingly being on electric.

With Europe's torrid love affair with oil-based fuels, also coming to an end due to the sudden, comical and much publicized VW emissions rigging..it may be only a matter of time before diesels are off the roads in all of the developed countries.

And so it shall be, I guess. Diesel shall be relegated to being the trucker's fuel for a lot more years though.

re: BMW to end diesel car sales in North America

All thanks to the VW fraudsters .

Americans were anyway never big on diesels; just when sales were picking up a bit, VW had to scam everyone. That gave diesels a bad, bad name. Not only in the USA, but worldwide (we saw effects of it in India too).

USA hates diesels, and China is also sold on petrols / EVs. That's bad news for us turbo-diesel fans. Europe is the only major market for diesels. The lesser the volumes, the lower will be the rate of technological development in diesels.

To think of it from a different perspective, it feels as if putting an end to diesels to promote EV's and eventually kill the ICE engines overall was always the plan. The VW emission scandal was just the catalyst at the right time. The emission scandal in my opinion was blown out of proportion by both media and the government.

BMW and Mercedes are also currently being investigated for defeat devices . None of them are saints to be honest.

But yes, I agree VW was caught first with their pants down and they were solely responsible for the current anti-diesel sentiment both in the EU and US. Diesels are getting banned in city centers within the EU now. Might soon happen in the US as well.

Absolutely, Porsche has not introduced a diesel Cayenne saying that diesels aren't in demand. Given the media hysteria, that's possible, but, prices of used Cayenne diesel models are up, this is the UK. Current owners aren't selling them because they don't have a replacement. Petrol is not suited for high mileage users, that isn't going to change, but legislation can drive up costs for everyone.

I'm surprised how governments are given a free pass in this scandal, it was driven primarily by the need to meet lower CO2 emissions targets, which petrol cannot meet, whatever you try.

Downsized petrol engines are a disaster when it comes to mileage, yesterday I was watching a jetta 1.4 review, and the mileage was briefly visible in the instrument cluster. It was a magical 7kmpl, this is with an 8 speed transmission, nearly half its tested mileage. The same mileage as in a GLS400, which has a bigger engine, weighs a lot more and costs six times as much. Downsizing, I believe, will be the next scandal. Strangely VW makes the cleanest diesels today.

True that!

Downsizing though may not end up being the next scandal, for sure, Petrol with forced injection will be the next in the scandal list. The addition of particle filter will be the next big thing. I was never a fan of downsizing for one the turbo to me is like forcing food down one#s throat and assume that he/she can run faster Second, the 6 cylinder smoothness was, is and will be unmatched. This is the very reason why Mercedes has returned to building inline 6 cylinders again. All the germans manufacturers are slowly returning back to the higher cylinder numbers.

VW has always made the cleanest engines but stupid norms and imaginative deadlines has forced them to cheat. Nevertheless, an internal paper in BMW states the same issue and they cleverly decided to take the costlier route by not cheating and have SCR cat and AdBlue in their cars from early on. I am sure BMW will remain the only manufacturer to not get caught into this scandal.

Not reading too well for the Germans.

EU investigates German carmakers for possible collusion

Excerpts:

Quote:
The EU Commission said Tuesday that it had received information that BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, and VW units Audi and Porsche held meetings to discuss clean technologies aimed at limiting car exhaust emissions.

The probe focuses on whether the automakers agreed not to compete against each other in developing and introducing technology to restrict pollution from gasoline and diesel passenger cars.

The Commission said, however, there was no evidence the companies had colluded to develop so-called defeat devices.

India may become a dumping yard for diesel vehicles if petrol price increases, EV's are still beyond the reach of common man. What do you see foresee for India?
