Ferrari has announced the name of its first SUV (or crossover). It's Purosangue – which translates to 'thoroughbred' in Italian.

Buyers will be able to choose between a purely internal combustion engine or a hybrid. It'll be the brand's first-ever vehicle with a five-door body but will feature a coupe-inspired shape. In terms of size, the machine won't be as big as the competing Lamborghini Urus.

The Purosangue will ride on Ferrari's new Front Mid Engine Architecture (above). The setup will feature a front-mounted engine that will be behind the wheels, and a dual-clutch gearbox will be at the rear. This setup will provide a better weight distribution. The platform will support all-wheel drive, and hybrids will exert their electric boost to the back wheels.

Speaking of multiple vehicles, Ferrari has a load of them planned for the next few years. Camilleri said in his presentation that Ferrari will launch 15 new models by 2022.

And we thought 'Pista' was the worse that Ferrari could do!

In case anyone is wondering, this is pronounced 'purrrro-song-way'.

Really hope they find a proper name by the time it hits production.

I have a feeling this is going to end up being a 'neither here nor there' model, body-shape wise - to stay away from the SUV label.

Something like the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo Concept

All the Ferrari purists can stay away from this news, but they better realise it's good for the company. Truth is, the money earned from the Porsche Cayenne leads to a better 911 & Cayman. The world has moved to SUVs and not even Lamborghini or Ferrari can stay away from them, as blasphemous as it may sound.

This class of car will add to the top line and more than that, the bottom line (FAT profits). As seen with Porsche, that'll bring even better sports cars.

No one will buy it then, Ferrari is smart enough to realise that. It has to be SUV'ish.

First look of the Ferrari Purosangue 'SUV'? Looks more Panamera than Cayenne though - IMHO.

Looks like a cross between Ferrari FF and Maserati Levante.

Definitely not a SUV but a 4 door Ferrari FF.

Lamborghini Urus is a better choice then.

Chris Harris on Ferrari Purosangue. Every wealthy tasteless person's going to want one, and there's a lot of those about.

Not quite true, a lot of those will have already bought a Lamborghini Urus. Ferrari is quite late to the SUV party.

You are under-estimating the purchasing powers of the one-percenters. :)
The Aston Martin DBX could be said as late to the party.
Something with a Ferrari badge always makes a late grand entry.

IMO, the Ferrari Purosangue might not be a typical high riding SUV, nor will it be loud or garish like the Urus.
At most would be a slightly jacked up stationwagon a.k.a FF. And overall styling like the new Ford Puma.

Im sure Ferrari will sell plenty of Purosangue but it will be by their usual arm twisting (which is how they pushed the FF, Lusso, and California) ---- i.e. you need to buy a Purosangue now if you want to keep your place in line for the next LaFerrari, Icona, TdF, Speciale etc.

Why Ferrari is making an SUV now?

Ferrari spent Euro 60 million buying up land next to the existing factory in Maranello in 2020. This is mostly likely so they can build a new factory to produce the Purosangue as they have neither the space nor capacity in the existing production areas.
