Is this the new Land Rover Defender?

There is an article on Top Gear today with a heavily camouflaged vehicle shown. The link is -

https://www.topgear.com/car-news/fir...rover-defender

Excerpt from the link -

Quote:
"This is not a special edition. It’s not a new-old one either. It’s not a modified one, nor is it a Bond special nor mad racing version. It is, in fact, the new new Land Rover Defender, revealed here by Land Rover in camouflage guise, lurking suspiciously near Land Rover’s base.

It’ll be lurking less suspiciously along the highways and byways of Britain – and the world, no doubt – in 2020, when it’ll be officially unveiled. Yes folks, we have confirmation that in just a couple of years time, the new Defender will be finished.

Land Rover won’t tell us much about the new car. And by much, we mean nada. “Jaguar Land Rover runs a wide range of engineering and technology development programmes,” a spokesperson said. “We can confirm that the Defender programme is progressing well and has reached an exciting stage of its development.”

What that stage actually is remains unclear. But what is clear is that it’s got a body (DC100 concept, anyone?), it’s got a chassis, there is an engine, it moves under its own steam and they’ve found a roundabout."

2 things -

1. "Best 4 by 4 by far"

2. That tailgate!

Good thing it doesn't appear to have been evoque'd like the Discovery. Hopefully it will retain the boxy design.

That camouflage and the disguise panels actually make it look more like the old Discovery 3 than a Defender. Will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

I hope our Force Motors does not get inspired by the 4X4XFAR sticker and conjure up something similar to what they have already done

Actually I will be quite disappointed by this new if it turns out to be true. The Defender will no longer have the live axle setup at the front and back as per the pictures. I don't think its appeal will be even close to last generation Defender. Also team-bhpian Shuvc pointed out over a chat that the pictures show a left hand drive vehicle. Why would they test a left hand drive vehicle in the UK?

Re: Is this the new Land Rover Defender?

I think this is the next gen Discovery rather than the Defender, the rear three quarter view kind of hints towards a Discovery like design language.

That's highly unlikely, not only is it too small to be a Discovery, but also the current generation of the Discovery was launched only in February 2017, so it's not even due for a facelift for another couple of years at the very least.

True! Infact right after posting, I had reported the post to the mods, asking them to delete it, that although the shape is Discovery like, LR wont launch another Discovery so soon. Infact, it could even be the real replacement for the Freelander, given that the Discovery sport that replaced it, has mostly gone softer, but then pure speculation, besides I dont think anyone is missing the Freelander. So wanted the mods to delete my previous post, it was written in haste without much of a deeper thought.

It is probably the Defender cloaked in a Discovery body shell

Rumour: New Land Rover Defender expected by 2020; EV by 2024

In January 2016, production of the Land Rover Defender came to an end. Now, according to a media report, a new version of the car in the works and expected to go on sale in 2020.

The new Defender is expected to be available in short wheelbase (2-door) and long wheelbase (4-door) versions. The former is likely to come in hard and soft top versions, while the 4-door model will come with a metal roof.

The next-gen Defender is expected to be built on an aluminium monocoque structure and could also be equipped with an independent rear suspension. While there has been no official word on the engine options, the base variants could come equipped with 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with the larger 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder units reserved for the top trims.

It is also reported that a Sport version with better on-road characteristics and an all-electric version are in the works. The latter's launch date is rumoured to be set for 2024.

Re: Is this the new Land Rover Defender?

Absolutely love the "4X4XFAR"

The sides somehow resemble the TUV quite a bit. That's not a bad thing at all since this one has its proportions bang on, unlike the Mahindra.

The "The Best 4x4xFar" is a very well-known Land Rover marketing tagline used by the company for ages now. It is synonymous with Land Rover, and especially with the Defender series. The oldest reference, and there are numerous - not including similar decals on ebay, that I could find was this from The Autocar journal, Volume 170, published in 1986. I am also including a hazy screenshot of that.

So, Force Motors did already "hijack" that tagline, and gave it an irrelevant spin

Coming to this new teaser of the next Defender, I am still big a fan of the old one's boxy shape and no-nonsense look. IMHO, Land Rover should not mess too much with the looks and proportions, but instead focus more on the underpinnings, and on bringing 21st century tech while keeping it as reliable and off-road worthy as ever.

Another article -

Is this the new Land Rover Defender?-screenshot_201811282322032.png

"Here's the clearest look yet at the basic two-door model of Land Rover's upcoming Defender, scheduled for launch in 2020.

The rugged off-road vehicle was being driven in Warwickshire, England, last week, not far from Jaguar Land Rover's Gaydon engineering and technical center.

Styled by Land Rover design chief Gerry McGovern's team, the new Defender appears to retain the basic silhouette and some of the styling cues of the classic 1948-2016 models.

Land Rover plans a family of Defenders, which would likely include a Wrangler-fighting convertible model, a long-wheelbase wagon and possibly a pickup version"

How sure can one be that this is indeed the Defender. If one looks at the silhouette, it looks very like an SWB Discovery (a bit like the Disco 3 in fact) but with 2 doors. Somehow I d have thought that with all the fantastic design resources at their beck and call, they’d have kept closer to the “icon” when designing the new generation Defender.

I mean if they can thoroughly modernise the Jeep in the form of the Wrangler while still retaining its iconic design cues, I am sure they can easily do the same for the LR Defender as well!

Add G Wagon to that as well. If Mercedes can still make the G Wagon so beautiful and meet all the safety norms, there is no reason why LR can't do a similar thing for the Defender.

Re: Is this the new Land Rover Defender?

Another Update -

The teaser photo comes with “instructions” not to unwrap until 2019, so don’t expect to see the new machine before the first of the year. There was another interesting date included in the message sent to us: December 27. We did some poking around and, though there won’t be any big reveal planned, that’s the date when a bit more info should be available on this new ride.

That’s not to say we don’t know anything right now. Our network of spy photographers caught the new Defender out and about in the UK, though we suspect Land Rover very much wanted the little SUV to be seen. Aside from rolling through some very public places, the camo wrap sported a bold hashtag reading #BEST4X4XFAR. That goes for the short-wheelbase Defender 90, and the bigger five-door 110 model. We saw both prototypes – each wearing the same prominent hashtag – within a 24-hour time frame a few weeks back. Aside from some early mule sightings where the Defender’s underpinnings were crowned by Range Rover body, these two appearances are all we’ve seen on the new Land Rover.

Is this the new Land Rover Defender?-screen-shot-20181221-12.06.54.png

Our sources have a bit more info to share, however. It appears the new Defender will ditch its old-school suspension for an independent setup. Power is also expected to come exclusively from a small 2.0-liter turbo diesel with no V8 options available, and a hybrid could appear later down the road as well. The changes could upset some Defender purists, but they could also help bring the plucky off-roader back to the SUV-crazy U.S. market. That tantalizing bit of info is further supported by the fact that this teaser came to us from Land Rover’s U.S. media team. Interesting.
