EU agrees to cut car emissions by 37.5% by 2030

According to a media report, the European Union (EU) has agreed to cut vehicle emissions by 37.5% by 2030. The European Parliament and the EU countries also agreed to cut down van emissions by 31% by 2030 with an interim target of 15% by 2025.

After months of standoff between the member countries over the figures for an emission cut, the 28-nation union came to an agreement with a compromise. While some countries were pushing for a 40% cut, countries like Germany were demanding a 35% reduction. An equidistant figure of 37.5% was agreed by all.

According to 2017 figures, the German auto industry is estimated at US$ 480 billion. The country had warned of job cuts with the adoption of stricter emission norms and the adoption of electric mobility solutions.

Around a third of all cars sold in Europe by 2030 are expected to be electric or powered by hydrogen. The European Union is now considering a reduction on truck emissions.

Re: EU agrees to cut car emissions by 37.5% by 2030

Some more info on the EU emissions:
Current average car fleet emissions is 118 g/km of CO2 (grams per km). 2021 target is all automakers need to reach 95 g/km.

These new targets are 15% reduction by 2025 and 37.5% reduction by 2030 on 2021 target of 95 g/km. Means, average fleet emissions should be less than 81 g/km by 2025 and 59.3 g/km by 2030.

VW mentioned yesterday that to reach the 2030 target, 40% of their cars need to be EVs. I believe all automakers will reach 40% EV sales by 2025 itself due to market dynamics.
