Ship sinks with 911 GT2 RS cars; Porsche to reproduce cars

According to a media report, Porsche will reproduce four 911 GT2 RS cars after a ship carrying customer cars to Brazil sank. Porsche launched the car in July 2017 and stopped production in February 2019.

The cargo ship carrying the cars was named Grande America and it sank off the coast of France on March 12, 2019. The cars were headed from Hamburg, Germany to Santos, Brazil. A fire broke out in one of the containers, which caused the ship to sink. All 27 crew members on-board were able to evacuate. It is reported that there were around 2,000 cars on-board including 37 new Porsche models. The Porsche cars included 4 Porsche GT2 RS cars, 718 Caymans, 718 Boxsters as well as Cayennes. Audi models like the A3, A5, Q7, RS4 and RS5 were also on-board.

In a letter to a customer in Brazil, Porsche Brazil reveals that the company ended the GT2 RS production last month but will reproduce the cars due to the nature of the situation. The letter also mentions that the cars would be produced in April, with delivery scheduled for June 2019.

Absolute shame to see such beautiful cars at the bottom of the ocean.

Just a question : In such a case, the loss is completely on the manufacturer ? I reckon they would have transportation insurance and that would cover it ? or the insurance of the ship would cover the cargo to some extent ?

Remember reading about a ship full of cars sinking a few years ago.

Looked it up; turns out car-carrying ship sinking happens more often than one might imagine:The above is not an exhaustive list.

In the 2012 incident, there is a mention of bringing up the cars from the seabed. And I think in the 2015 incident the cars were salvaged, but I don't know if they were used afterwards.

There are potentially thousands of brand-new cars on the ocean floors.

Car carriers are by design less stable than a regular container or bulk cargo ship. They needed a lot of volume to accommodate the cars and thus have a high freeboard ie tall sides. This causes them to become top heavy. As a consequence despite designers attempts to make them safe their tolerance to listing in rough seas can be questioned. In this case as we know it was fire and not a stability problem that caused the sinking.

They will have Marine Insurance that will mitigate the risk for the manufacturer. A car while being transported may not be covered by the regular insurance we have, (eg. when packers & movers transport it) but the transporter would have marine insurance to cover it.
