Rumour: Next-gen Honda Jazz to come in a hybrid-only avatar

According to a media report, the next-generation Honda Jazz could be offered only in a hybrid guise. It has been spotted testing.

The spy images reveal an evolution of the 4th-gen Jazz. It gets a tallboy design with large windows and redesigned lights, bumpers and bonnet. The interiors get a centrally mounted infotainment screen and triple dial AC controls.

While details on the exact powertrain are not yet known, the Jazz is expected to use dual electric motors and a combustion engine along with the CVT transmission, similar to the one found on the CR-V Hybrid.

In the UK market, Honda currently sells the CR-V Hybrid that replaced the diesel version. The petrol variant is also sold alongside. It is reported that the hybrid model accounts for 60% of the total CR-V sales in the country.

If next gen Jazz will be launched only in hybrid version in India, the target customer segment will shift one or two segment above considering that the price could well be close to 1.5 million.

This would be a very important milestone if Honda actually goes ahead and launches a Hybrid Jazz in India. The Jazz when it initially launched- Although a sales flop due to the price, stood out due to several USPs like space, magic seats etc.. Since then it has kind of faded into being one among the premium hatches. Something like this can really wake it up again.

Although, knowing Honda history with the Jazz, seriously doubt they will price it well.

There is no Jazz coming for India as per various sources -

And if it's only being designed to take a hybrid avatar - makes even less sense for Honda to bring it here!

IMHO, a hybrid only Jazz makes A LOT of sense for Honda India.

- Launching the next gen Jazz with conventional petrol and diesel engines, and matching up to rivals on price and equipment is an uphill task for Honda. A hybrid Jazz can deservedly command a premium.

- The Jazz hasn’t been as successful as say, a City, Civic or Amaze, so they don’t have much to lose. This can be their first mass market hybrid. They can gauge the market reaction and use those insights for future mass market hybrids.

A well equipped hybrid Jazz at 12-13 lakhs ex-showroom could actually carve its own niche. But does Honda have the heart to do it?

1. BS VI
2. Brio phased out.

3. Jazz, Amaze, and pretty everything else from the Honda stable is still in BS IV era.

Any chance this is the replacement for the Brio? Just may be, because if the spotted car is way too smaller than existing Jazz.

Just wishful thinking.

When cellphones were launched in India, they cost 50 grand. Today, you can buy a perfectly functioning touchscreen smartphone for 5 grand. You'll see the same price drop with hybrids in India as production ramps up & they go mass market. Maruti-Toyota & Honda are betting big on hybrids for India.

Agreed. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'd like to say that hybrids make the most sense for India as they can double or even TRIPLE the fuel economy overnight. The luxo-barge Camry we recently reviewed gave 15 kmpl in the city...think what a small hatchback will deliver. In an FE-obsessed country like ours, people will swarm to a Jazz Hybrid like bees to a hive!

Electric cars are still a long time away from mass adoption. Hybrids are the today, EVs are the tomorrow.

It makes for a good case for a Petrol Hybrid in the Jazz but the technology is still some time away to become as cheap so as to make the Jazz competitively priced. The there's also the affinity of Indians towards diesel(which might change after BS6) and considering our market is quite conservative when it comes to new products and technologies, I think a launch can be contemplated only after 2025.

Well, I wouldn't call most of Honda's recent decisions sensible

Cheers!
