For sure 1500 RPM by normal standards is fairly high but I remember Gordon or someone once saying the engine idles like an old school F1 engine, so well above 2000.
I guess I was going off the fact Gordon specifically wanted to beat the rev happy nature of the F1 BMW powerplant. [ Source] Quote:
Murray challenged Cosworth to beat the F1's ability to gain 10,000 rpm per second. Cosworth's engineers got 28,000 rpm per second.

Going by the below ( source): Quote:
It is capable of up to 28,400 revs per second (the F1 engine’s equivalent is around 10,000 revs per second). Which means that from idle to its 12,100 rpm redline takes just 0.3 of a second

Doing some very back of the envelope maths: You're getting 8520 RPM in that 0.3 s blip. Which means idle must be roughly 3580 RPM to max out at 12100 RPM.
Granted a 3000 RPM idle is going to jar the teeth of any punter who owns one. And torpedo any chances of passing emissions regulations but it sure would feel like an F1 style engine then, buzzing away behind you.
Anyway, I can't find anything more on the engine idle, everyone rightfully focuses on that ludicrous redline. |
