Rumour: Chevrolet Camaro could be discontinued

According to a media report, Chevrolet has shelved plans for the next-generation Camaro. Production of the sixth-generation car is expected to end in 2023.

The Camaro shares its platform with the Cadillac ATS and the CTS. Both these cars are expected to be replaced by the CT4 and the CT5, which will be based on a platform called the A2XX. The Camaro is not expected to move to the new platform.

The biggest issue for the Camaro could be the sales figures. In 2018, the muscle car sold only 50,963 units in the US, which is around 25% less than the 2017 sales figure, which stands at 67,940 units. In comparison, in 2018, the Dodge Challenger sold 66,716 units and the Mustang sold 75,842 units. According to the report, the 2019 Camaro also received severe criticism for its design, which made Chevrolet tweak the front-end for the 2020 model.

It is also reported that some members of the team working on the Camaro, including its chief engineer, have been redirected to other projects.

The Chevrolet Camaro is available with a choice of a 4-cylinder, V6 or V8 engines paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Bumblebee!

Short-sighted decision IMHO! GM obviously got the formula wrong with the sixth generation, but the sales story isn't so bad as to consider it a write-off! The figures for 2018 were still around 60% of the peak figures achieved by the very successful fifth generation!

Penny-wise, pound-foolish IMO. The Camaro is a legendary brand and, as a car, it adds a lot of intangible value to Chevrolet. 50,000 units / year for a 2-door is pretty good. These are all Wall Street-focused moves keeping the short-term advantages in mind. Crazy GM.

Also wanted to add this won't be the first time Camaro production is stopped. There was a huge gap of almost a decade between the 4th & 5th gen Camaros.

Must appreciate Ford for its commitment to the Mustang. Sure shows. The current-gen car is simply amazing.

The old adage of trying 'shrinking to greatness' is being demonstrated by US automakers.

So many MBAs running these businesses and they are all doing the same thing.

They have many bad calls and close calls over the past 20 years, their chance to get back their global 1&2 slots is now truly out of question.

Re: Rumour: Chevrolet Camaro could be discontinued

Camaro sales continue to fall in Q2 and Q3 2019, and Chevy is now looking to poach Mustang customers.

Chevrolet is offering a $3,000 discount to Ford Mustang owners . To be eligible, you need to have owned a Mustang for at least 30 days. Others get a $1,000 discount.

In Q3 2019, Camaro sales fell 15% to 12,275 units, while the Dodge Challenger sold 18,031 vehicles.

I wish GM doesnt axe Camaro for their next platform. It is a legendary name associated with the brand and it will be a short sighted move by people who crunch numbers.

Last year Ford announced that its going to discontinue all passenger vehicles but Mustang. I feel Camaro would be the right competitor to push the boundaries of Mustang even though Challenger is leading HP game.
