Rumour: Nissan to pull back from Europe

According to a media report, Nissan will be pulling back from Europe to focus on other markets like the USA, China and Japan.

Rumour: Nissan to pull back from Europe-qashqai.jpg

Nissan is said to announce its "operational performance plan" on May 28, 2020. This comes following the dramatic exit of Carlos Ghosn from the helm of Nissan. In addition to reducing costs, the company is also aiming to rationalise operations, re-prioritise and refocus its business.

The report also sates that the company aims to cut competition and expand cooperation with its partners. Mitsubishi will focus on plug-in electric hybrid vehicle development in Asian markets outside China and Japan, while Renault is expected to focus on EV technologies and Europe.

The move is also believed to free up resources for the company, which could be invested in products and technologies for the USA, China and Japan. It is also expected to reduce R&D costs, which could be diverted into core markets and core products.

Re: Rumour: Nissan to pull back from Europe

As per the Reuters report mentioned above - it's not a full retreat. Nissan is planning to only focus on it's crossovers like the successful Qashqai and Juke.

From what I've heard - Qashqai was the segment defining product in Europe for a long time and Nissan may not give that up so easily.

Quote:
To be sure, focusing on its three core markets does not mean a total retreat from elsewhere for Japan’s second-largest automaker by volume after Toyota Motor Corp.

Nissan will try to maintain a presence in Europe through stepped up efforts with its Qashqai and Juke crossover sport-utility vehicles (SUVs).
And it also states the same might happen to the Indian market too. And looks like SUVs may be the future here as well for Nissan - with the upcoming Magnite sub-4m SUV being their make it or break it product for now. Kicks is also getting a renewed focus with the 1.3 turbo petrol.

Quote:
Still, its new plan calls for tighter, targeted lineups in countries such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Russia, Brazil and Mexico - such as focusing on the beefy Patrol SUV in Africa and the Middle East.
Will be better than the alternative - An overwhelming majority of BHPians think Nissan will exit India.

Re: Rumour: Nissan to pull back from Europe

Nissan wants to focus on the US? Are they going to sell more rentals?
Most Nissan owners in the US are a frustrated bunch because of failing CVTs which cost a bomb to repair. Renault-Nissan really needs to improve their offerings or the Chinese might gobble them up.

Re: Rumour: Nissan to pull back from Europe

I find that difficult to believe.

The Qashquai is one of the top 10 selling cars in the UK. The Leaf makes respectable numbers and that poised to grow. All manufactured in the UK. If Nissan withdraw from Renault (who make the Micra), they would be wise to keep that UK plant running and add capacity.

Nissan don't sell much else in Europe, so the days of D segment saloons are long past.
