Skoda has released images of the Octavia vRS IV that would have been displayed at the cancelled Geneva Show.

Powered by a 1.4 litre engine (you read that right!) and a 85kw electric motor the car will have a total power of 242 BHP.

Here's the stats:

0-100 in 7.3 seconds and top speed is only 225 kmph.

Slower than the current vRS and top speed is also way lower too.

Doesn't augur too well for us enthusiasts.

Maybe a good ides to pick up the current gen while one can.

This is really disappointing. The whole point of an RS variant is to offer performance that is a cut above the vanilla Octavia range. Although judgments can't be passed before actually driving it, prima facie the VRS IV might be one of the only 2 generations of the Octavia which couldn't do justice to the RS badge (The Laura being the other one)

This is a classic example of downsizing. Performance has borne the brunt here and I don't think things are going to get any better for petrolheads. Only 1 or 2 out of 10 manufacturers are going to buck the trend and continue with large displacement engines.

Guess the weight of the hybrid battery system is really impacting performance. Even the current 1.8 TSI Octavia doesn't seem too far behind this car and even has a higher top speed.

The current Octavia RS245 is having a great run even though a limited number of units have been allotted. I only expect demand to increase post this news. If you were incase waiting for the next gen Octavia VRS, go to the Skoda webpage and book that thing right NOW!

Another reason to grab one of those 200 current generation Octavia vRS 245 which is currently on sale in the market.

The numbers, engine, all looks underwhelming compared to the outgoing model, but I guess that’s where the future is heading to. The area where this one thumps the outgoing model is in the looks. And I am not sure if Skoda, BMW and Kia have outsourced their grille design to the same company.

This is the result of current design having to conform to pedestrian safety norms - a requirement of a minimum of 10 cms between the hood and the engine.

Supposed to reduce fatality in the event of pedestrian collisions as it reduces stiffness.

The drawback is that it contributes to increased curvature on the hood area. Personally not a big of this sort of design as it makes the car look bulkier and less sleek.

Just to highlight again for RS-lovers. Skoda is very much on track to ALSO launch a petrol-only 2020 Octavia vRS with 242 bhp / DSG7 / EA888 2.0 TSI. This is identical to the 2020 Golf GTI and bettered only by real scorchers like the GTI TCR & the Cupra range. 4x4 & diesel versions are also planned.

I am guessing India will again get the petrol-only model as a halo car UNLESS Skoda decides to get into hybrids in a big way. This is unlikely given the ambivalent tax structure towards hybrids.

That's what I thought. There is no way the Octavia's flagship variant - with so many followers worldwide - will be bogged down by just a 1.4 TSI. The 2.0 TSI simply had to be there. Although the plug-in 1.4 will be good to have for emissions & environmentalists.

Don't like the styling at all. If I wanted a vRS, I'd lap up the current 245.

Global trends are hard to buck.

Every AMG model will be hybrid from 2021 despite its global fan following. And VW has confirmed that even the Bugatti Chiron's successor will be hybrid.

Given these trends, it might be difficult for Skoda to continue with non hybrid vRS's for long.

Hard facts I find difficult to digest. :(

True that, problem is with that price point you are better off getting the 3 Series, anyway the Vento stays on for atleast till end of next year

The looks have definitely been upgraded. The car is way more sexy with the new wheels now. The headlights and taillights don't appeal to me. The looks are subjective. The headlights are nice, but the grills are way too big. The taillights resemble a Hyundai Elantra or an XCent. More discussion on this can be done on this after the pricing is announced and more defined interior and exterior pictures are released.
