Volkswagen Taos SUV (Seltos / Creta rival) unveiled

Quote:
The all-new Volkswagen Taos SUV has joined the party at the expense of the Golf. While VW does not call it a replacement, it will be interesting to see if it could make do with the disgruntled Golf enthusiasts. To make the offering attractive, the German manufacturer will position the Taos below the Tiguan and perhaps well below the entry-level version of the previous Golf.

While Volkswagen has not even hinted at Taos making an India entry and remains focused on propping the vehicle as a viable and affordable option for Americans, the SUV itself - on paper - sits nicely into the taste and needs of the Indian buyer as well. It is 4,533 mm long from nose to tail, has a wheelbase of 2,689 mm, is 1,841 mm wide and stands 1,635 tall. For reference purpose, Hyundai's Tucson is 4,480 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and is 1,660 mm tall while Creta is smaller from every direction than the Taos.

What happens to T-Roc now?
It's smaller at 4.2 meters (for record) yet priced at Rs.20 lakhs. Hope this longer one does not go Skoda Karoq way (Rs.25 lakhs).

This car looks really nice matured and understated, which is a refreshing change among the sea of overdesigned cars we see everywhere nowadays.
However, this car is at least half a size bigger than the Creta or Seltos. In fact, this is bigger than the Tucson. So, not sure if this can be branded as a Seltos or Creta rival.

Looking through some of the reports, it seems to be positioned just below the Tiguan which will be great if VW can bring the same to India without compromising too much on quality or equipment.

I was under the impression that Taigun was announced as the rival of Creta/Seltos in India. It's >4m in length so can't compete with the Brezzas and the Venues.

This car won't come to India anytime soon. Taigun is a do or die product for VW in India, IMO. Taos, as I understand from some YouTube videos, is in fact larger than the previous-gen Tiguan in terms of interior space. So where this would really be positioned and in which markets, is interesting! The car does look good.

The car looks beautiful and well designed. It’s an size bigger than the Creta / Seltos and in Tucson territory. Do not think this will come to India given the volume of that segment. CBU route like T-roc will make it very expensive for the size / segment it will on.

This looks better and bigger than T-Roc. Not sure how this could be Seltos/Creta rival when T-Roc itself is priced more.

And I don't understand VW SUV plans. It has already launched T-Roc, now this. And Taigun and Nivus which are expected in next year. Confusing!

You have to give it to the Volkswagen Group to make clean and beautiful cars. The understated elegance seems to be consistent across all the models across their subsidiary companies.

As much as the car look beautiful, I doubt if it would make it to Indian shores. It is definitely not a Seltos/Creta rival based on its dimensions. It would be more a Tucson/CRV rival where we have the Tiguan allspace at a slightly higher cost and if the 5-seater Tiguan makes a comeback, it might be a direct rival to Tucson/CRV. So where does the Taos sit in their hierarchy?

It will sit below the Tiguan in Volkswagen's US line-up. It will be powered by an EA211 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (that is also used for the Jetta in the US). Outputs are 158 hp and 249 Nm of torque.

Some more photos along with interior.

Re: Volkswagen Taos SUV (Seltos / Creta rival) unveiled

Given that Tiguan 5 seater is expected to launch on 7th Dec in India, basis how VW prices Tiguan, it will be clear how Taos can join the portfolio in future.

The lineup shall look like following (onroad Gurgaon):
1) Taigun - 10 to 20 Lakhs (highly competitive segment - low volume for VW)
2) T-Roc (Discontinued?) - 20-25 lakhs (Real competition - Creta, Seltos BUT pricing competition - Compass, XUV, Harrier, Hector main competition - consumer is split for diesel vs petrol, brand loyalty, Made in India factors, excess premium pricing, etc.)
3) Tiguan 5 seater - Most likely 25-35L range (Compass, C5, Gloster)
4) Tiguan Allspace - 40 Lakhs (People start cross shopping in entry level premium brands or else go for Gloster/ Fortuner)

If Tiguan comes in at ~30-35Lakhs on-road, Taos should replace T-ROC and come in at 25Lakhs on road price. Premium of 5 Lakhs over elevated hatchback Taigun would be worth it. Taos looks like more mature car than either of T-ROC or Taigun.

However, given that VW is struggling in India, bringing in Taos may take 2-3 years, if Co. survives.
