GM claims it will phase out internal combustion engines by 2035

The GM has declared that it will phase out all the petroleum based cars by 2035 as per the report
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/28/b...gtype=Homepage.

This marks a a seismic shift by one of the world’s largest automakers that makes billions of dollars today from gas-guzzling pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

G.M.’s move is sure to disrupt the auto industry. With car and parts makers employing millions of of people in the United States and worldwide in 2019, more than any other manufacturing sector by far.
It will also have huge ramifications for the oil and gas sector, whose fortunes are closely tied to the internal combustion engine

GM is late to the party, but yes it is expected announcement from all the OEMs unless they want to be left behind and forgotten.

The oil companies are not lethargic and they won't be in a shock. Many have already made substantial investments in renewable energy and other portfolios. They know it is inevitable and they would have drawn an exit strategy and entry into new sectors/services as long term roadmap.

Recent news: Total invests $2.5bn in AGEL and it is just a small chunk of its investment.

Agree with you, though there will be a huge loss and write offs in oil assets which are stranded. The money they make from selling electricity is peanuts compared to their oil sales as EVs are mostly charged at homes or offices.

The companies which are late to the change will likely collapse, for years GE relied on making turbines for the coal power plants, inspite of changing market they are adamant to change.

As the transition to electric cars speeds, China is likely to be the center of action, due to its marketsize, investments and the battery technology,connected car tech and 5g. Nicely put up in the following article;

re: GM claims it will phase out internal combustion engines by 2035

Electric cars, green energy, need for significant infrastructure development of road {and metro rails} in cities including sealink roads, connected autonomous cars - call are almost a given inevitable. Not only technology but laws and public opinion are pushing in that direction. Yet if one were to read at least half the posts on our forum on these topics you get the clear impression that at far too many of our members are either not for it or wishing away reality. ICE engines will not so gradually fade away. 15 years is not a long time in the life of a nation. Why only electric cars even ocean cargo liners that run on renewable energy are being developed. A Swedish ship builder is constructing this modern day sail ship that will carry cargo across oceans. Times, they are a changing.

Off late GM is making bold claims. Now they are challenging Norway in their latest superbowl ad.
