The 2021 McLaren Artura - McLaren's 1st sports series Hybrid

McLaren will reveal their new hybrid sports car, the Artura on February 17th, 2021.

McLaren Automotive uploaded a trailer for the car on their YouTube channel today -

Quote:
Due for launch early in 2021, our new, next-generation V6 hybrid will be named the McLaren Artura. The new model follows in the footsteps of the McLaren Senna, Speedtail and Elva in having a name rather than a number designation – an approach first introduced in 2017.
All-new in every respect, the Artura represents a major step forwards in performance, technology and sophistication. Its High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) powertrain will be a world first in its segment, drawing on the expertise in electrification first showcased in the pioneering McLaren P1™ hybrid hypercar, launched back in 2012.
The Artura will come with a Twin Turbo V6 Hybrid engine, and will compete with the Maserati MC20, Porsche 911 Turbo 992 and the Audi R8 V10.

The engine will still be built by Ricardo, and will gain a light weight hybrid system said to increase weight by only a double digit number. The Artura will be the first of 18 electrified McLaren cars set to be launched by 2025.

Re: The 2021 McLaren Artura - McLaren's 1st sports series Hybrid

The Artura was previously thought to be the next instalment in McLaren's Sports Series, but the entry-level range has reached the end of the road with the limited-production 620R. Instead, the Artura will sit somewhere between the GT and 720S.

Artura caught during testing.

Re: The 2021 McLaren Artura - McLaren's 1st sports series Hybrid

I am hoping to get one of the press car for several days in the spring to see just how good it is....or isn't.. Talking to a few people at McLaren, they claim the hybrid is unnoticeable and performance is a major step up on the old 570 series.

Re: The 2021 McLaren Artura - McLaren's 1st sports series Hybrid

The McLaren Artura has been revealed -

- 3.0 litre Twin-Turbo V6 M630
- 671 horsepower (577 from the V6, 94 from the electric motors)
- Expected starting price of $225,000
- Has a range of 20 miles on electric power only (that’s about 10 more than the P1)
- 0-100 in 3 seconds with a top speed of 330KPH (205MPH)
- 8 speed transmission with no reverse gear (when the driver shifts into reverse, the electric motors spin backwards to move the car)
- Weighs only 3,300 pounds (1,498KG)
- Might have the comfort and usability of the 570s with better performance than the 600LT
- Spins to 8,500 rpm
- Pirelli P Zero tyres contain a chip which tells the car tyre temperatures and pressure (Pirelli Cyber tyre) When driving on a race track, the driver can be alerted when the tires' temperature has reached the ideal level for maximum grip and also when the tires need to be allowed to cool down. A driver can also be warned when the car is exceeding the tires' maximum speed rating
- Will compete with the Maserati MC20
- Has Apple car play and Android auto (older McLarens didn’t get that)
- 5 year/75,000 miles warranty (bumper to bumper)
- Sports series McLarens (570S, 600LT, 620R) have now been discontinued. The GT is now the entry level McLaren
- McLaren has started taking orders, deliveries are expected in June

I assume McLaren Boston will have a press car available by June? That’s when the first deliveries are starting

You and many other P1 owners have mentioned that there’s no noticeable turbo lag in the P1 because the electric motors fill in the power gap, will that also be also be true for the Artura?

And will there be any risk of the Arturas batteries going dead if you leave it parked for a few weeks?

In E-mode, the P1 can only do a theoretical maximum of 6 miles with a fully charged high-voltage battery. In practice, you get a bit less than that, and much less still if you drive aggressively. The Artura's stated electric-only range is over 3x that of the P1's.

That's a bit of showmanship by McLaren. Even if the engine "can rev" to 8,500RPM "for drama", it makes peak power at 7,500RPM. The most-of-the-time fuel cutoff redline is at 8,200RPM, with occasional extra allowance to 8,500RPM. In other words, there's fine print.

The 5 year warranty (up from 3) is the most significant bit of news for future McLaren owners.

The E-motor in the Artura provides instant torque of up to 225Nm, which is significant enough for torque fill. It should compensate for the low-end downsides of a turbocharged drivetrain, although they aren't delivering all of that torque all at once.

Dead is one thing, but damaged is another. Indeed, Li-Ion batteries can and do get damaged if they are deeply discharged. If the car needs to sit for an extended period of time, it would have to be plugged in, just like in the case of the P1.

I would hope to be able to get a press car from McLaren North America in April or May. I just did an article on my impressions coming out of the global launch which they liked.

On the turbo lag fill in, I don't know if the Artura is set up this way. The P1 set up is highly complex and the car will not run without the battery working (I found this out when I asked if they could build me a P1 without the battery/hybrid system, the answer was it was not possible).

I dont think you have the same dead battery risk on the Artura as you have on the P1.

Re: The 2021 McLaren Artura - McLaren's 1st sports series Hybrid

the 3.0 litre hybrid V6 produces 671bhp which although won't match the 903bhp of the hybrid P1, by all appearances it will seemingly, at the very least, match the 2019 600LT which uses a variant of the V8 to produce 592BHP and is significantly less expensive than the P1 while also being quite an exciting new hybrid.
