These are cars that were originally designed as far back as 1935 and now being sold as new from the original factory with the chassis and engine numbers as a continuation of the original numbers. Emission compliant too.

The Alvis Car Company are manufacturing to special order a limited number of famous Alvis models - Bertelli, Vanden Plas, Graber, Lancefield and Park Ward.

The cars are faithful to the original design and by using the original Works Drawings from the period they retain all their traditional character and quality, yet are emission compliant. The cars carry Alvis chassis numbers and engine numbers which follow on from the last in the model sequence, which is why they have been designated the Continuation Series.

You might say that Graber is not as well known as Grand i10, Elantra has more FE than a Lancefield and your neighbour whom you’re trying to keep up with has a Verna and not a Vanden Plas. And you would be right.

Each car will take about 5000 hours to manufacture. Prices start at £2,50,000 and will increase according to options. For reference, the new Ferrari GTB costs £1,82,000.

Alvis have almost 100 years engineering experience and heritage as a top car maker and later diversified to become a major player in the aero and defence industries.

The engine in these cars is the 4.3 Litre Alvis in-line six-cylinder engine which is faithful to the original design and drawings in maintaining all its period character and quality, yet by utilising modern technology is emission compliant.

This is a tricky proposition indeed. Most of the collector cars from that era have astronomical values due to their age and heritage. Wonder if a new 'fresh off the line' car will carry the same sentimental value and lineage of owning a real car from the 30's. With prices starting at £2,50,000 as mentioned above, this will find only a very select audience.

I suppose these 'new' cars will not be coming with an AC or music system to retain their originality. But what about safety features like headrests, airbags, ABS etc. ? Wont there be issues registering these 'new' cars without such safety features ?

The cars have current day safety systems - seat belts, collapsible steering, air bags, disc brakes and fuel injection (to meet emission norms). Unlike the Aston Martin Continuation Series which are not street legal, these cars will be.

Alvis received an approval in 1935 to build 150 cars out of which 73 were built prior to the war. Production came to an end as the factory was destroyed during WW2. The company now wants to continue production of the remaining 77 cars for which it received approval in 1935.

It’s interesting to note that a lot of the original parts remained in store which will be used on the new cars.

Their current value is subjective - some may like such cars fresh from the factory (less hassles, assured authenticity through factory invoices and single owner registration, more reliability) and some may prefer the ones produced earlier. While the value of the earlier cars would depend on the seller and the buyer’s willingness to pay such value, the new ones have a fixed price.

Love these initiatives.

Couldn't care about the effect on the price of collector's cars. Anyway the new restomods/retro cars are priced the same as the old cars.

Can't wait for years to pass and they launch 'fresh of the line' cars made in the last three decades of the 20th century.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. I am glad these lovely ladies are making a comeback.
The collectors might not be happy and it's possible, due to drop in value, their collection might suffer from lack of maintenance. But in a few decades these beauties will be old enough to fill their shoes.

What a great idea. I always wondered why companies don't use old design with new technology. These 77 units will be sold out for sure. As they mentioned in the video, their target customer is young who wants a classic car but reliability of a new one. I would not be surprised if atleast 2-3 orders come from India alone.

What about metal bumpers? Metal bumpers were replaced by soft plastic ones due to regulations on pedestrian safety, so old designs will not pass regulations now.

Note that one just can't replace the old metal bumper with a similar shaped plastic one because there are norms regarding the sizes as well.

People who have enough money to pay for these cars probably wont mind the road legal status - they can drive them around on their private roads in their estates.

I see them as a marriage of classical art with modern engineering
