Re: A flying car prototype with a 160 BHP BMW engine completes first-ever inter-city flight

While watching the video, I noticed an intriguing action. The rear wheel was rotating in flight. I don't know why it did, but was it something significant to not keep the wheel locked or just a miss?

Am I reading this correctly? A 1000 kms journey in 35 mins? It looks faster than most commercial jets. Definitely it's beaten the speed of sound. Not sure what the cruising speed of this car was when it was airborne.

Logically, one would need a flying license to fly this contraption. So the net result is what? A cheaper Cessna with collapsible wings?

Compared to this, I think this helicopter style eCar is more realistic. Go to the roof, take off, land on destination roof.

God, exactly my thoughts. The car is huge and I don't think it will have a market in Asia ever. On the contrary, the chopper idea seems at least feasible.

But then with our typical traffic sense, we will make our skies a mess too if the licensing norms aren’t strict enough!

This is straight from the Jetsons ! Can see this being useful to some extent in regions which have acres of open space and are sparsely populated to begin with like Scandinavia, Canada, Midwest and central US, Russia among other nations. Couple of things which I am wondering though:
  • How is the Crash testing done for this vehicle?
  • Wont it require clearance for ATC every time to take off and land?
  • On the lighter note, how will the insurance companies cover both the car and the riders .

It would require a clearance only in certain areas. If you are in a rural area, away from major cities and flight paths then there won’t be any ATC clearance required. In addition, it might fly really low and thus rules could be made to exempt such requirements as long as you don’t fly near an airport on in a flight path. They would have to tie up with a special insurance company willing to cover it.
