Rumour: Toyota developing a diesel-hybrid powertrain for use in 4x4 vehicles & LCV

Toyota is rumoured to be developing a diesel-hybrid powertrain. According to a media report, the Japanese car brand aims to use the diesel-hybrid powertrain on off-road 4WD models and commercial vehicles.

Toyota is said to be working on updating its entire passenger vehicle lineup with a hybrid powertrain, moving away from pure IC-engines in the process. Toyota will update its passenger vehicles with its petrol-electric and the rumoured diesel-electric hybrid powertrain options.

Similarly, reports suggest that the Japanese brand could update its commercial vehicle models such as vans and light trucks with a hybrid-only powertrain as well.

While details are scarce, reports suggest that models such as the Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado, Hiace Wagon & Granace could incorporate the hybrid options in the future.

I hope they might incorporate it in the Hilux and Fortuner as well. I am sure the Fortuner would do well in India at least.

An idea whose time has definitely come . Diesels are anyway so fuel-efficient and a hybrid will add another 50 - 75% to that . God knows, diesels need some positive press too. The last 5 years have been brutal to their reputation.

However, the main advantage here is that hybrid tech will help diesels meet ever-tightening emission norms. Even in India, the OEMs are afraid of next level norms (coming in a handful of years) which are super strict. It's the reason why so many brands dropped their diesels. BS6 was easy, the next stage in 2023-24 won't be.

It will be tough to manage the NVH aspect with this diesel hybrid concept. Toyota diesels aren’t the quietest or the most vibration free engines out there. You are always aware of the big motor inside the engine bay. Having that engine shutting off and coming alive every now and then will be a huge challenge from an NVH perspective. It is not going to be seamless like it is with the Camry or ES.

This is not a problem for commercial applications but will be a rear challenge for the engineers on personal use vehicles.

On an unrelated note, does this mean that it’s possible that around the time of 2023/24 transition might be the next time around that we get some stunning deals on BS6 stock? Just like some BS4 offerings went for steep discount around the time the BS6 was coming in? Of course I fully understand most manufacturers would have tapered production in anticipation but still.

Toyota has a brilliant 1.5 liter 3 pot hybrid powerplant. Electric power of 80hp completely replacing the mechanical gearbox to cope during the torque challenged regions of the ICE. Besides changing the hydraulic power steering to electric there might be few other changes required on the now luxuriously appointed crysta. The silhouette too will have to be lightened. Hybrid powerplants are paired with FWD transmission for better energy utilisation, Pity though. Can't say the say for pure EVs. EVs thankfully seem to be receiving the joy of RWD motoring.

As for hybrid power on SUVs, Toyota simply puts a generator on the rear axle of a FWD vehicle to harvest brake energy from that axle too & the marval of a generator doubles as an electric motor when resistance is reversed.

& Diesel hybrids, I'm not so sure. Wouldn't the need for both electric motors & turbo charger be a costing foul in everyday cars?

If I remember correctly the steep discounts were given as they fully expected the govt. would extend the deadline, which they didn't and weren't prepared for.
If that was the case, I doubt they would be ill prepared again.
