Rumour: New-gen Toyota Land Cruiser Prado unveil in 2022 EDIT : Now Unveiled

The all-new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series was internationally unveiled earlier this year. The latest iteration of the Japanese brand's flagship SUV is now on sale in international markets.

Now, according to a new media report, Toyota is said to be working on introducing an updated version of their smaller Prado as well. Reports suggest that the next-generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado could be unveiled as early as 2022.

Rumour: New-gen Toyota Land Cruiser Prado unveil in 2022 EDIT : Now Unveiled-toyotalandcruiserprado.jpg

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado last received a major facelift back in 2009, although Toyota has been introducing multiple subtle updates over the years. The Prado, which continues to remain on sale in certain international markets, received a minor update as recently as June 2021, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Land Cruiser.

While details of the upcoming 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado are scarce, reports suggest that the new model will continue to retain its ladder-frame underpinnings, while its design could be inspired by the new Land Cruiser 300 Series.

Powertrain options are expected to remain unchanged. This includes a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine and a 2.7-litre petrol unit. However, Toyota could also be looking at installing the 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine from the new 300 Series on the upcoming Prado.

Recently there were also rumours of Toyota working on a diesel-hybrid powertrain, which could potentially be considered for the upcoming Prado as well.

re: Rumour: New-gen Toyota Land Cruiser Prado unveil in 2022 EDIT : Now Unveiled

I can't help but wonder why Toyota cannot bring the Prado at a sensible price for their Indian customers. If this is priced around 60-65 lakhs on road, It will garner a lot of sales. Toyota has a strong customer base of people who own Innovas and Fortuners and many of them would buy this as an upgrade. I know at Least a dozen people who are tired of buying Fortuners every update and want something more premium. There are people who would love the Toyota reliability and resale value even after spending north of 50 lacks. If the Prado comes to India, Even we would upgrade our Innova of 8 years for this.

Thanks,
Abie

Discussed many times before here and elsewhere. Problem is that these platforms are different and expensive to produce. I won’t know the costs but I don’t think they stand a chance to compete with someone like Mahindra who can develop a new car at what like 600 cr!

Also, to setup a manufacturing line in India, they will need some monthly volumes. Currently, customs duty on SKD without engines is around 30% if I am not mistaken and GST on SUV is around 50%. If Toyota uses engine and some other parts from local production, they will still need to get a lot of body parts and other from overseas. Setting up a press shop for few hundred pieces is not going to be viable at all.

Now you can do a back calculation, to keep costs at 60-70 lac ex showroom, they will have to keep ex plant costs less than 35 lac i.e around 45-50,000 USD. And anyone buying a product at this price will be looking at a reasonable loaded one. So, Toyota is happy selling these at much higher prices elsewhere without bothering about our tiny market.

Many years before they did a complete exercise as told by someone, none of the dealers or their agencies could commit them 500 pieces a month at an ex showroom of Rs 60 lac. So, guess we have to contend with whatever is available locally or make ourselves so resourceful (rich ) to buy at CBU prices

will continue to adopt a strong ladder frame, but newly developed incorporating the design philosophy of TNGA. The engine is equipped with the V6 and 3.3-liter diesel turbo (309ps/71.4kgm) that are also installed in the 300.
Quote:
Prado with a total length of about 4850 mm and a total width of about 1850 mm is excellent in handling even on mountain roads in Japan, and has gained high support from users who value practicality.

the concept is followed by the next model, which is the fifth generation, and the basic skeleton of the robust ladder frame and front double wishbone / rear-rigid axle has been greatly improved and inherited.

The engine is a V6, 3.3L diesel turbo (309ps/71.4kgm) mounted on the Lankle 300. The installation of the gasoline engine is undecided.

Its not just India where the Prado is overpriced. In the UAE, the top end used to cost upto 220,000 AED (44 Lakhs) IIRC at one point though it seems they've reduced it to around 190,000 AED (38 Lakhs) now. Keep in mind that this is with a tax rate of just 5%. Considering the Spartan interior and engines (the base model gets the 2.7 litre 4 cylinder petrol from the Innova and Fortuner), the pricing is quite steep and I feel that the Fortuner is more value for money. The Prado is much more comfortable with its self-leveling KDSS suspension though. I would rather go for the Explorer or a Pallisade for the price and then buy a used Wranger for off road

The engine bit seems interesting. Ofcourse the Prado will get the V6 petrol and diesel engines from the Landcruiser, but the engine from the Camry? No doubt the 2.7l is old now and will be retired soon, and they will need another 4 cylinder engine for the entry levels of the Prado. It may get the 2.5l petrol engine from the Camry, but not with a CVT as said in the video, will get an 8 speed TC. The next gen Tacoma is rumoured to get the 2.4l turbo petrol, but don't think Prado would be getting it.

The posh sibling of the Prado is here. One mean looking SUV. Lexus has been knocking it out of the park with their design, be that the RX or the NX.

Overall structure and shape looks promising. Though I expect the Prado to get a more function over form interior design (not that the GX550 is any less functional)

What is more interesting is that the Prado would be getting more varied engine options, including petrol, turbo petrol, diesel and hybrid, unlike the GX550 which has only petrol/hybrid options. With the Fortuner going upmarket can't expect the Prado to get a a poverty spec variant, but I do Pray Pray Pray against all odds that the next gen Prado retains the 3 door SWB version. (with the current styling philosophy could very well be the spiritual successor to the FJ Cruiser)

NEW Land Cruiser Prado will appear in the fall of 2023, there will be three faces.

Quote:
There are three types: round eyes reminiscent of the old Prado with a classic taste, horizontal squares, and three light bulbs embedded in the squares.
Quote:
While there is still a lot of mixed information about the power unit, there is no doubt that the super centerpiece model of autumn 2023 will exceed the expectations of car lovers.

re: Rumour: New-gen Toyota Land Cruiser Prado unveil in 2022 EDIT : Now Unveiled

Toyota confirms the "Landcruiser" badge will return to North America.

Although the grapevine has been fairly strong, Toyota USA has finally confirmed that the Landcruiser will finally come back to the North American Market.

In all probability, it will be the Landcruiser Prado and not the LC 300 that will be launched without the Prado tag.

We have seen that the 2024 GX 550 has created a huge amount of buzz in the market and it was only a matter of time before the 2024 Prado was unveiled.

If Toyota does indeed launch the LC Prado, it will be a first for the North American market as Prado has never been sold here.

My take:

I believe it will be slotted between the 6th Gen 4 Runner and their full-size SUV, the Sequoia; these two BOF platforms have a $20,000 gap that will be nicely plugged.

For the overlanding crowd, it is a big announcement as they will have one more option other than the Wrangler & the Bronco.

If I were to guess, the LC Prado/250 will start at US$ 50,000 to 55,000 and go up from there. It will have the goodies such as the Centre Torsen Diff and the Rear Locking Differential which is keeping in line with what comes standard on the current Prado.

For the folks who want to go off the pavement in style, there will be the Lexus GX 550 Overtail and for people who don't want the bling, there will be the LC Prado/250.

-The new Toyota LandCruiser Prado, based on its Lexus GX luxury sibling

-The new Prado looks set to inherit its boldest exterior design since the original 1990 model, which was based on the now-38-year-old, box-shaped LandCruiser 70 Series.

-There may be multiple front-end designs available for the new Prado, including one with circular 70 Series-inspired headlight internals. It is unclear if these will be available in all markets.

- Engine, the front-runner – according to the latest reports from reputable Japanese magazines – is an evolution of the 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel four-cylinder in today's Prado, plus the HiLux ute, Fortuner 4WD and HiAce van.

Quote:
In the current model it develops 150kW and 500Nm, following an update in 2020 – but it could be upgraded to match the 165kW and 550Nm of the inbound Toyota HiLux GR Sport off-road ute.

Some form of hybrid power is expected to feature in the new LandCruiser Prado range, but it remains unclear in what form electrified technology will be made available.

Japanese media have pointed to the 2.4-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system bound for the new Lexus GX (as the GX550h), as well as the Toyota Tacoma pick-up in the US.
- There are no plans to add a hybrid twin-turbo petrol V6 to the Lexus GX – a decision expected to apply to the Prado.

- The new Prado will measure 4900mm long, 1920mm wide and 1900mm tall, riding on a 2850mm wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles) - make it 75mm longer overall, 35mm wider, 10mm taller and 60mm longer in wheelbase than today's model.

- The new Prado could ditch its long-running name in favour of the 'LandCruiser 250 Series' badge, referencing the expected model code of the new Prado (today's model is the 150 Series).

-North American reports have suggested the new Prado could be introduced in the US simply as the 'LandCruiser', to lead a return of the iconic badge to the US after it disappeared with the end of 200 Series production in 2021 – as the 300 Series is not sold there.

- Inside this is expected to include a widescreen 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch or 14-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite navigation and over-the-air updates.

Land Cruiser for the US market.

Prado in international market, so in other words the Prado will be the international Landcruiser in Europe and N.America.
