Rumors: Ford interested in selling Volvo. BMW an interested party.

The Goteborgs Posten daily has reported in a news item on their website that the US based automaker Ford is considering selling off their Volvo division.

One of the parties said to be interested in acquiring Volvo from Ford is German maker of luxury cars BMW.

The news item cited a source within Ford who said that BMW is studying a possible purchase of Volvo.

There have been market reports in the past suggesting that BMW was in informal talks to buy Volvo from Ford Motors.

A Volvo spokesperson had nothing to say: “We cannot comment on speculation, this is a question for our owner.”

Ford had originally acquired Volvo in 1999. Volvo is now part of the Ford’s Premier Automotive Group which also include their other owned brands including Jaguar and Land Rover.

Rumors: Ford interested in selling Volvo. BMW an interested party.

How ironic it should be if Volvo CV buys Volvo Cars from BMW in turn.

They've already sold Aston Martin to Prodrive for £479 million in March 2007.

I don't really see how Volvo can fit in with BMW's product lineup. Last thing they need is more competition in house & mark my words, after the Rover disaster BMW will think 10 times before acquiring any other company.

It will be an even bigger disaster for Ford to sell Volvo. Its not some Aston Martin where you have to put more and more money. Volvo is an asset that ford should never let go of.

It's also the only group in Ford's PAG which is making any profit. Jaguar and Land Rover are just losers.

I hope Volvo isn't bought over by some Chinese company.

Though it's next to impossible, I hope GM doesn't buy it either. They made a mess of Saabs.

We share hopes there. Yet, I wouldnt be surprised if a Chinese consortium turned up as the biggest bidder. And then redefine "Volvo" like SAIC did MG.

Ford need Volvo for two reasons

Ford use Volvo's resourcces for safety validation
Volvo provides an upmarket lbabel for Ford - beyond the Mondeo, the Ford brand is zilch in that segment

I agree that Volvo is an asset, safety validation etc. But how many people WANT to buy a VOLVO.

A lot more than would (outside the US of A) would want to buy a FORD, anyway. Or a Lincoln, or a Mercury.

They're selling at the wrong time, though - Volvos have just started looking better and almost natty in some cases. They're no longer an 'UGH'!
